Her Smile
He looks at her dead in the eyes, he says something but she's too far gone to hear him.
"Yeah," She says,
"I gotta go. I love you."
"Oh okay, I love you too." He smiles at her, but her face remains unchanged as she walks away from him.
He watches her walk away not knowing that that would be the last he saw of her. The girl that will return to him will look, and talk like her but will not be her. Deep inside his heart, he will know she is lost but when he looks at her and she looks at him all he will feel is her love for him. Little does he know she is counting down the days til her time ticks to a stop. She knows how to smile, how to say I love you with her missing heart, and how to say goodbye as if she will return tomorrow. One night she goes back to her home a few to many hours away, she takes a bottle of pills and swallows as many of them as she can, and he calls her, and she answers.
"Hey love," He starts and she smiles, "How was your day?"
"It was alright, how was yours?" She asks, setting up her phone for their nightly call.
"It was good, I went to the park with my sister and Rilo..."He tells her all about his day, as she slowly closes her eyes listening to his voice, before whispering one last, "I love you, mi amor."
He sets up his phone, "Goodnight, sleep well my love. I love you too."
He falls asleep with a smile on his face like usual. But his morning would be anything but normal. He wakes to her not facing him like normal, he assumes she's still sleeping. He gets ready for the day and watches videos on his laptop to pass the time while he waits for her to wake. But she won't be waking up today. The pills she swallowed had done their job.
"Love we have to go, I have to go. I'm sorry. I love you, I'll talk to you later." He says as he hangs up, he has to start his day.The ending of the call echoes in the silence of her room, her eyes stuck forever open, the vomit rotting the smell of her room. He will call and text, but he will never get another response. Not from her. He lives a bit too far away. He wants to check up on her but figures maybe she's just sick and sleeping through the day. But when night rolls around there's still no response, and no night call. His worry takes hold, he calls anyone he can think of who maybe lives nearby and can go to check on her. Her mother. Her mother says she will check on her in the morning to ease the boys' worry. So he paces. Back and forth. Throughout his home. Waiting. Finally, the call he's been waiting for.
"Hello?" He says.
"This is Officer-" the officer starts, "Are you the boyfriend?"
"Yes sir.."
"I'm sorry to inform you but she is gone, her mother is with her now. There's nothing anyone can do."
"What..." He starts, the words the officer just said echo in his head, "When? How? This can't be happening.."
"It appears she had an overdose at some point last night."
"That can't be possible, we were on call last night."
"I'm sorry...-" The officer continued.
He will never truly recover from this. Her smile etched into his mind for all of time.
