Come to Me

The old fishermen will tell you there are two kinds of lighthouses. Those built by men. And those built by regret.

If you ever find yourself sailing the rocky coast where the fog refuses to lift, you'll see her standing in the lantern room just before dusk. Every evening, without fail, she climbs the narrow staircase and tends the light. No one remembers her arriving. No one remembers another keeper before her. They simply know that when the storms come, the light will always be waiting.

Most believe she is only an old woman. The sea remembers differently.

Long before the lighthouse stood upon those cliffs, there was only a lonely stretch of jagged stone where waves shattered against the shore. It was there she waited, hidden among the mist, her voice drifting across the water.

"Come to me."

Countless sailors answered her call.

Some came willingly, enchanted by a song too beautiful to resist. Others fought with every ounce of strength they possessed, but the sea is patient, and her melody was stronger. Ships splintered against the rocks. The waves swallowed their cries. She watched them disappear beneath the dark water until silence returned once more.

That was her purpose.

Or so she believed.

Yet with every passing season, she watched something she could never possess. Families sailing together. Friends laughing across the decks. Lovers holding one another as they disappeared beyond the horizon.

She could call them to her.

She could never go with them.

Then one evening, everything changed.

One sailor looked past the song and saw the soul singing it. For the first time in her endless existence, she was not feared. She was loved. When a violent storm rose without warning and threatened to claim him, she made the only choice her heart would allow. She surrendered a part of herself to save the man she loved, giving up the very gift that had defined her. The sea spared his life, and for a time, he remained beside her.

But mortals belong to the land.

He eventually returned to the life waiting beyond the sea. He promised he would come back. At first, he did. Then less often. Until one day...He never came at all. Some say he forgot her. Some say he married, raised a family, and lived a long, ordinary life. The sea never revealed the truth.

Left alone with nothing but memories, she returned to the cliffs where her song had once led so many to their deaths.

Only this time, she chose a different calling.

Stone by stone, light by light, she became the guardian of the very waters that had once served as her hunting grounds. Every evening she climbed the tower. Every night she lit the beacon. Every storm she watched over strangers, guiding them safely past the rocks that had claimed so many before.

The whisper remained.

Only its meaning had changed.

"Come to me."

No longer a promise of death.

Now an invitation to safety.

So if one fog-covered evening you glimpse a lone figure tending the light atop an old lighthouse, offer a quiet thanks before continuing on your journey.

For some legends are born from monsters.

And some become legends because they choose, one soul at a time, to become something better.

Even now, when the sea grows restless and the wind carries a voice across the waves, sailors no longer fear the words.

They simply follow the light.

And they come home.
