As You Wish

free note

Every morning, I begin my day with a simple creative exercise. I ask for a completely random image and challenge myself to write whatever story it inspires.

Today, I asked for something delightfully wild and completely ridiculous.

This is the image I received.

So... here's your story.

Enjoy.

As You Wish

Something was coming.

After centuries imprisoned within brass and silence, I felt it long before the lamp was disturbed. A soul. Bright. Pure. Untouched by greed or ambition. I had served kings who craved empires, queens who demanded immortality, generals who wished for victory, and scholars who sought forbidden knowledge.

This...

This was different.

Such innocence.

Such extraordinary light.

At last.

A master worthy of the gift.

I could almost feel destiny gathering around us.

Yes...

Take the lamp.

Lift it from the dust.

Ask me to heal the sick.

To end hunger.

To unite kingdoms.

Wish for peace.

Wish for hope.

Wish for a better world.

I am ready, my lord.

...Or perhaps my lady.

The lamp shifted.

Hands wrapped around its weathered brass.

Small hands.

Curious hands.

The seal twisted.

Light erupted around me as centuries of magic poured into the air. I stretched, laughed, and rose in a brilliant swirl of sapphire smoke before bowing low.

"My master," I said with a smile. "Your servant is—"

I stopped.

Standing before me was an adorable little girl, no older than two, wearing one pink rain boot, one yellow sandal, and a shirt with a smiling dinosaur on the front. Sticky fingers clutched a half-eaten lollipop while blue frosting decorated most of her face.

She stared at me.

I stared at her.

She giggled.

Then she pointed at my beard.

"Puppy."

What?

No.

Absolutely not.

Days became weeks.

Weeks became months.

The mighty servant of kings had become the reluctant architect of tea parties, pillow forts, giant bubble festivals, and a Tuesday afternoon when every puddle in town turned into warm chocolate milk.

He had summoned a hundred puppies.

A thousand balloons.

One marshmallow fountain.

Three pirate ships for the neighborhood sandbox.

He had once transformed an entire city park into a kingdom of oversized crayons because she wanted to "draw on the grass."

Every request was met with the same reluctant sigh.

"As you wish."

And every time, the world laughed a little louder.

Children played together.

Neighbors who had never spoken shared ice cream beneath cotton candy clouds.

Strangers danced beneath gentle rainstorms of colorful water balloons before helping one another clean up the streets.

No one fought over any of it.

They simply smiled.

One afternoon, he found himself riding in the back seat of a toy convertible that had somehow become large enough to drive down a real road.

Beside him, his tiny mistress hugged a floppy-eared bunny and happily sang a song made entirely of words that didn't rhyme.

He looked out the window.

Playgrounds stretched across every block.

Hot air balloons drifted lazily overhead.

A light shower of rainbow sprinkles dusted the sidewalks, where laughing children tried to catch them on their tongues.

Ahead of them, a cow wearing oversized pink sunglasses happily drove the little convertible as though this were the most ordinary thing in the world.

The genie closed his eyes and chuckled.

For centuries, he had prayed for one worthy master.

Someone who would heal humanity.

Someone untouched by greed.

Someone who would choose peace over power.

He had imagined a king.

A queen.

A prophet.

He never imagined...

...a toddler.

He watched her wave excitedly at everyone they passed.

Every stranger waved back.

Perhaps, he thought, peace had never needed wisdom.

Perhaps it had only ever needed wonder.

He leaned back in his seat and smiled.

It seemed...

he had been granted his wish after all.
