What the Security Cameras Don't Catch
When We’re Not Looking
People think cats sleep all day.
They don't.
People think those strange sounds at three in the morning are nothing more than zoomies and curiosity. A knocked-over glass. A racing blur through the hallway. The occasional unexplained crash from the kitchen.
It isn't.
Humans have spent thousands of years believing they rule the world.
That's adorable.
Every evening, just before the last light goes out, another world quietly awakens.
House cats.
Barn cats.
Shop cats.
The old tabby that naps outside the bakery.
The black cat that watches from the cemetery fence.
The scruffy stray everyone assumes is simply looking for his next meal.
None of them are what they appear to be.
While humanity sleeps, the Guardians begin their work.
They patrol neighborhoods, watch over families, mend tiny tears in the fabric between worlds, and quietly chase away the things that should never find their way into yours.
No one notices.
That is precisely the point.
The greatest magic is the kind no one remembers seeing.
Of course, every guardian was once an apprentice.
Mittens was having a terrible night.
His tiny wizard hat kept slipping over one eye.
His whiskers were singed.
His potion refused to stop glowing.
"This," sighed the elderly mouse beside him, adjusting his spectacles, "is exactly why we measure moon dust."
Mittens stared into the bubbling cauldron hidden inside the bookcase cupboard. Ancient spellbooks lay open around him while tiny glass bottles filled with stardust, catnip pollen, and bottled moonlight lined the shelves.
"I measured."
"You guessed."
"...Mostly."
The old mouse rubbed his forehead.
"We are preparing an invisibility potion."
"I know."
"It should not sparkle."
"I know."
"It definitely should not be singing."
Both of them looked at the cauldron.
It burped.
Then it began humming.
The mouse closed his eyes.
"Oh dear."
At that exact moment...
The cupboard door opened.
A sleepy little boy stood there rubbing his eyes.
He blinked once.
Twice.
There, inside the cupboard, sat his tiny tabby kitten wearing a crooked blue wizard's hat, stirring a glowing cauldron while a mouse read from an ancient spellbook.
No one moved.
The mouse whispered without looking up.
"Don't panic."
Mittens panicked.
The potion erupted in a brilliant flash of blue light.
POOF!
The cupboard was empty.
The little boy stood blinking into the darkness.
"...Mittens?"
A soft meow answered from behind him.
The kitten sat innocently on the bed, licking one paw before carefully washing behind an ear.
Nothing unusual.
Nothing magical.
Just...
cat things.
The boy smiled.
"I knew it."
"What are you doing?" his mother called from down the hall.
"The cat was making potions."
A tired laugh drifted through the house.
"Potions? Back to bed, sweetheart."
He looked at Mittens one last time.
The kitten slowly closed one eye.
Was that...
A wink?
The boy smiled and climbed back beneath the blankets.
Outside, the moon slipped behind a cloud.
Somewhere across town, an old gray cat leapt silently across a rooftop.
A black cat watched patiently from a church steeple.
A one-eyed stray disappeared into an alley just as the first hint of dawn touched the sky.
By sunrise, every guardian had returned home.
They stretched.
They yawned.
They curled into warm patches of sunlight.
And they slept.
After all...
They had been protecting your world all night.
The security cameras never caught a thing.
