The Place I Visit
The Place I Visit
Everyone wanted to know his secret. Not because he ruled the kingdom.
He didn't.
Not because he commanded armies or inherited a great fortune.
He had done neither.
He served the people as the kingdom's chief negotiator, settling disputes between merchants, resolving conflicts between neighboring provinces, overseeing public funds, and advising the Crown on matters of diplomacy. Wherever disagreement threatened to become division, he somehow found common ground.
He listened more than he spoke.
He never raised his voice.
He never hurried a decision.
And somehow...he was almost always right.
People admired him. Then they became fascinated by him. Soon fascination became obsession. Rumors spread through every market and tavern.
"It has to be the cedar tea."
By week's end, merchants couldn't keep cedar leaves on their shelves.
"No, it's the morning porridge."
Bakers found themselves making the same simple porridge he supposedly ate before sunrise.
"He sleeps exactly six hours."
The city adjusted its routines.
"He meditates every evening."
Gardens, temples, and quiet courtyards filled with people sitting cross-legged, hoping wisdom might arrive if they simply remained still long enough.
Everyone copied his habits. No one found his peace. The more they failed, the more determined they became to uncover the truth.
Servants were bribed.
Housekeepers were questioned.
Gardeners were followed.
Letters were intercepted.
One ambitious merchant even offered a year's salary to anyone who could reveal the dignitary's daily routine. They learned everything...except what mattered. He smiled kindly whenever another spy was discovered in his home.
He never punished anyone.
He simply thanked them for their time, wished them well, and politely asked them not to return. His calm only deepened the mystery. Finally, the Crown appointed its finest investigator.
She was brilliant.
Methodical.
Patient.
She studied his movements for months. She learned the names of every merchant he visited, every path he walked, every meeting he attended.
Nothing explained him.
When reason failed, she chose deception. Posing as a traveler in need of shelter, she earned his trust over many weeks until, at last, he welcomed her into his home as an honored guest. She believed she had finally won.
That evening, after supper, he excused himself with his usual gentle smile. "I wish you a peaceful night."
She watched him enter his bedchamber. The door closed. She waited. The house grew silent. Moonlight spilled through the windows. It was peaceful. Certain he had fallen asleep, she quietly crossed the hallway and turned the handle.
The door was unlocked.
Inside...the room was empty. She froze. The bed remained perfectly made. The windows were latched from within. There were no hidden passages behind the shelves, beneath the bed, or inside the wardrobe. She searched every corner twice.
Nothing.
Only a single crystal rested upon a small wooden table beside the bed. It glowed with a soft warmth. Curious, she reached out. The crystal felt almost alive beneath her fingertips.
Far beyond the kingdom...
where no map marked the way...
a man sat peacefully upon an ancient stone wall.
A gentle stream wandered through emerald grass before disappearing beneath an ivy-covered archway. Mountains stood quietly beyond the valley while birds welcomed the fading afternoon with songs untouched by the noise of the world.
He closed his eyes. The silence restored him. Not because it erased his burdens. Because it reminded him who he was before he carried them. Then...he felt the warmth.
Someone touched the crystal. His eyes opened. He smiled softly.
"It seems you've found me."
He rose and walked toward the ivy-covered doorway. Golden light embraced him. Then, he stepped through.
The investigator gasped. One moment the room had been empty. The next...he stood quietly before her. She instinctively stepped backward.
"W...Where were you?"
He looked toward the crystal for a long moment before meeting her eyes again. His expression held no anger. Only kindness.
"I was looking for your secret," she admitted quietly. "The tea... the herbs... the meditation... the routines... everyone wants to know how you became the man you are."
He smiled. "I know."
She glanced around the room once more. "But where did you go?"
For the first time since she had met him, he looked beyond the walls of his home, as though he could see something far beyond the city. Somewhere only he knew. Then he looked back at her.
"Nowhere special." A gentle smile touched his face. "Just a place I visit."
She waited for him to say more. He never did. Years later, scholars would still debate his methods. Merchants would continue selling cedar tea. Books would be written about his habits. People would imitate his routines, hoping to discover the source of his wisdom.
None of them ever found it.
Because they spent their lives searching for his secret...when they should have been searching for a place of their own.
