The Gardener

It was a beautiful morning.

Sunlight spilled across the stone terrace, warming the flowering vines that climbed its ancient walls. A gentle breeze carried the scent of cedar and lavender through the mountain air while waterfalls echoed softly across the valley beyond.

There was nowhere she needed to be.

Nothing demanded her attention.

For a little while, the morning belonged entirely to her.

She settled deeper into her favorite chair, a half-finished crocheted blanket resting comfortably across her lap. A porcelain teacup sat beside her, still releasing delicate ribbons of steam into the crisp air.

The rhythm was familiar.

Loop.

Pull.

Loop.

Pull.

Some people found peace in silence. She found it in making something beautiful one stitch at a time. A soft meow interrupted her thoughts. She looked down just as a tabby cat rubbed itself affectionately against her leg.

"There you are." She smiled and patted her lap.

The cat leapt gracefully into place, circled twice, and settled against the blanket with a contented purr. She scratched behind its ears before returning to her crochet, smiling as the little creature closed its eyes in complete satisfaction.

"This is your favorite part of the morning, isn't it?"

The cat answered with another quiet purr.

Beyond the terrace stretched a view unlike any other.

Forests rolled across distant hills beneath waterfalls that tumbled endlessly into crystal lakes. Floating islands drifted lazily through golden clouds, each carrying forests, villages, oceans, deserts, or mountains of their own. Some glowed softly beneath the morning sun while others disappeared behind curtains of mist.

It was a view she never grew tired of. She reached for her tea and took a slow sip.

Perfect.

A leather-bound book rested quietly on the small table beside her. Its worn cover was beautiful, but she made no effort to open it.

Not yet.

This morning was too peaceful to interrupt. She picked up her crochet once more.

Loop.

Pull.

Loop.

Pull.

A faint buzzing drifted through the air.

She paused.

Listened.

Then continued crocheting.

The buzzing came again.

Softer this time.

She sighed.

"Oh, surely it can wait."

The cat opened one sleepy eye before closing it again. Another sip of tea. Another careful stitch. The buzzing returned. Longer now. More persistent. She looked toward the old leather book. Neither she nor the book moved.

"I know," she whispered.

The buzzing continued.

With patient resignation she set her crochet aside and gently lifted the heavy book onto her lap. The moment she opened it, the buzzing became a voice.

Tiny.

Fragile.

Almost lost beneath tears.

"Please..."

She turned another page.

"Mommy and Daddy are sad..."

Another.

"I'm scared."

She stopped reading.

A gentle smile crossed her face.

"Oh, little one."

She closed the book and looked out across the breathtaking valley.

For a long moment, she simply watched the floating islands drifting peacefully through the morning sky.

Then she stood.

The cat gracefully hopped onto the stone railing beside her, watching with quiet curiosity. She removed her glasses. Far beyond the terrace, hundreds of floating worlds stretched toward the horizon, each alive with forests, oceans, mountains, cities, and dreams.

Her eyes slowly moved from one to the next.

Waiting.

Searching.

Then she found it.

Near the edge of a small blue-and-green world, a tiny golden light flickered unsteadily.

"There you are."

She smiled.

Closing her eyes, she lifted one hand and made the gentlest of gestures, as though brushing a single leaf from the surface of still water. The trembling light settled. Its glow steadied. Then it quietly spread outward like ripples across a calm pond before disappearing altogether.

She opened her eyes.

The valley was peaceful once more.

Returning to her chair, she opened the book again.

The frightened voice was gone.

Only quiet remained.

She nodded with quiet satisfaction.

"There."

She closed the book.

"All is well again."

The tabby leapt back into her lap without invitation. She laughed softly and stroked its striped fur.

"You always know when the hard part is over."

The cat purred louder. She picked up her crochet.

Loop.

Pull.

Loop.

Pull.

For a while, neither of them spoke. The breeze carried the scent of wildflowers across the terrace. The waterfalls sang. The floating worlds continued their silent journeys across the sky. She smiled to herself.

"Honestly..."

The cat looked up.

"...Earth is always asking for my attention."

The cat gave a tiny, knowing chirp.

She chuckled.

"Yes, yes... I know."

She reached for her tea once more.

"They're trying."

And with that, the Gardener returned to her peaceful morning, quietly tending the smallest, noisiest, and perhaps most hopeful little corner of creation.
