The Waters
The Waters
For as long as anyone could remember, people had come to the Waters.
Some arrived by carriage.
Others by horseback.
Years later, they came in automobiles.
Today they arrived with satellite navigation guiding them down the same winding forest road.
The travelers changed.
The Waters never did.
No one could say exactly when the retreat had first been built.
Its stone cottages seemed as old as the surrounding pines, their gardens lovingly tended through every season. Wooden benches overlooked a quiet lake where mist lingered each morning before surrendering to the rising sun.
There were no signs promising miracles.
No sermons.
No ceremonies.
No lessons.
Only a simple wooden gate.
Beyond it...
peace.
The stories had traveled farther than the road itself.
"Go to the Waters."
"Stay awhile."
"Sit by the lake."
"Listen."
That was all anyone ever said.
In 1848, a grieving mother arrived in a horse-drawn carriage. She had not spoken since burying her young son. She remained beside the lake from sunrise until evening. When she finally returned to her carriage, she thanked the caretaker before quietly beginning the long journey home.
She was speaking again.
In 1917, a young soldier stepped off a train carrying memories no one else could understand. He sat beside the water for two days.
When he left, his nightmares had not vanished.
But neither had his hope.
In 1946, a husband and wife came together.
They barely acknowledged one another.
They spent an afternoon listening to the water.
When they departed, they walked hand in hand.
In 1978, a teenage girl arrived on a bicycle carrying nothing but a backpack and tears she could no longer hide.
She left smiling.
No one knew why.
No one asked.
Years passed.
The world became louder.
Roads widened.
Cell phones appeared.
Cities reached toward the sky.
Still...
the Waters waited.
One autumn morning, an exhausted young executive stepped from a rental car. His phone continued buzzing with messages as he crossed the old wooden bridge.
The caretaker greeted him with a warm smile.
"I've heard this place helps people."
"It does."
"How?"
The caretaker looked toward the lake.
"I suppose you'll have to ask the water."
The visitor frowned.
"The water talks?"
The caretaker smiled.
"It has excellent manners."
"What does that mean?"
"It waits until you're finished."
The visitor laughed politely, convinced he was hearing another old country saying.
Still...
he followed the path.
Hours later, he returned.
His shoulders seemed lighter somehow.
His phone remained in his pocket.
He thanked the caretaker and quietly drove away.
The caretaker never asked what the water had said.
That was never his place.
His work was different.
He prepared the cottages.
Swept the porches.
Stacked firewood beside every hearth.
Trimmed the gardens.
Mended the fences.
Placed fresh flowers upon every table.
Each morning, he opened the gate.
Each evening, he closed it.
So the next weary traveler would find the place exactly as it needed to be.
As the last light of day disappeared behind the trees, he latched the old wooden gate and looked across the lake.
The breeze settled.
The surface grew perfectly still.
Then...
the whispers began.
Soft voices drifted across the water.
Hundreds of them.
Some joyful.
Some grieving.
Some filled with gratitude.
Others still searching.
He never listened to their words.
Those conversations belonged to the Waters.
A gentle smile crossed his face.
He looked toward the quiet cottages waiting beneath the evening sky.
Then, almost too softly to hear, he whispered,
"We'll be ready."
And somewhere beyond the mist...
the Waters quietly listened.
