Day Four
Day Four
Prompt: "Finding a note in the walls of an old house. Does it make you smile... or make you scream?"
Morana stood on the front steps, with a key and two suitcases. Not excited for this new part of her life. The floors creaked, the windows were cracked. And the entire house gave off a sense that it was watching her.
"Well, this will be interesting."
Morana started settling in over the first six months. And started doing small amounts of repairs and maintenance. So in an early morning in early April where she had called up a few friends to redecorate, give it a little more Pizaz, give the house new walls and an open floor plan. It was all starting to go well when the first sledge hammer hit.
When the wall came down so did hundreds of worn paper letters flowing out of the wall.
"well, damn."
Her friend, Daniel, said with surprise as the letter's fell down.
"Guess some old bloke wanted to get a point across."
Daniel said with a worried sense of humor.
"Yeah..."
Morana stood there for a moment, then slowly, she started picking up the letters and putting them on the newly furnished kitchen counter. Organizing them by dates.
"These were written in the Twenties...."
"20's, like 1920's? Geez!"
She started reading, they were tips for the future details about the house, how to open the sticky lock to the basement. Reasons to appropriate what you have and not giving up on what you want.. all signed with the name Alfered Johnson, with the date.
Except the last one which was addressed to Evelin Trench, September 1936.
Dear Evelin,
Though my time has run out I hope you won't forget me in the past time.
In my last days I was weak, and senile.
But my hands stayed true even if they weren't steady.
When you find these letters it will have been too late for me, but not for you.
Get out of this house, out of this town. Don't come back.
Hide these letters in the walls, maybe, one day, they'll save someone else before it's too late.
Truly,
Your Father
"Who the hell is Evelin Trench? What did he mean too late? What happened to him?"
Morana read the letter close to twelve times, not learning anymore then she did the first or the fifth, and Daniel didn't have much luck either.
