A recent study conducted at Johns Hopkins University found that caffeine can enhance long-term memory. The research involved participants taking 200-milligram caffeine tablets after studying images. When tested the next day, those who consumed caffeine were better at distinguishing similar images compared to those who took a placebo. This suggests that caffeine strengthens memory retention by enhancing the brain's ability to separate similar but distinct items, a process known as "pattern separation." While caffeine has been known to boost attention and focus, this study highlights its unique role in reducing forgetting over 24 hours.
