Cameroon military seizes weapons destined for bokoharam

"Cameroon seizes weapons en route to Boko Haram, thwarting terror plans and raising security concerns."
Maroua, Cameroon – January 3, 2025
Cameroonian military forces have intercepted a significant cache of weapons and combat equipment intended for the Nigeria-based terrorist group Boko Haram. The seizure occurred in Maroua, a northern town near the borders with Nigeria and Chad.
Among the confiscated items were long-barreled firearms, military uniforms, over 400 packets of tear gas, and more than 100 gallons of oxidizing agents used in the production of explosives. Authorities believe these materials were en route to Boko Haram's stronghold in Nigeria's Sambisa Forest.
Midjiyawa Bakari, Governor of Cameroon's Far North region, commended the military's efforts, stating that the interception has dealt a significant blow to Boko Haram's attempts to rearm and recruit new members following recent losses inflicted by the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) of the Lake Chad Basin.
Investigations are underway to trace the origin of the weapons, some of which are suspected to have been smuggled through the Douala seaport. The military has noted that certain seized combat uniforms resemble those used by Cameroonian infantry and air force personnel, raising concerns about Boko Haram fighters potentially disguising themselves as government troops to deceive civilians.
Authorities are urging civilians, especially in border towns and villages, to report any suspicious activities or unfamiliar individuals to help prevent Boko Haram from rearming and recruiting new members. The government has not disclosed details about the identities of those arrested in connection with the smuggling operation.
Since 2009, over 40,000 people have been killed and 3 million displaced due to the conflict involving Boko Haram in Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. The recent seizure underscores the ongoing efforts by regional forces to curb the group's activities and restore stability in the Lake Chad Basin.
