A New Public Network for Distributing News
Notd was created for publishers so they could experiment with new reader-funded revenue streams, without expensive changes to their websites. Since launching, many features have been added that go beyond just letting publishers offer micro-subscriptions to sections of their publications. Publishers control the price for monthly or annual subscription that readers pay (which can be set in one-cent increments), while keeping 90% of the revenue. They can offer multiple streams, by individuals or teams of their journalists. They can offer free content and high resolution images. Posts can be annotated in a way that no other platform can offer (hover over that one). Anyone hosting a stream can invite others to debate them in-line and in real time.
Subscribers can read posts on the website or on an app, or get them emailed (like a newsletter). Subscribers can also comment on posts, separate from the note threads. Unlike on ad-funded “free” networks, Notd subscribers who engage will be less likely to be trolls or attack the writers than on the ad networks. Readers also have options for how they are notified of new posts – headlines, excerpts, or a feed of the most recent posts (and, email, of course).
There are no limits on the length of posts, we leave that up to the writers.
And we won't charge extra for verification or authentication – we prefer that publishers and journalists claim their public identities.
Notd won't cannibalize news subscriptions, in fact it will increase overall subscription revenue as many people who refuse to pay for full subscriptions will pay for just the sections they want. If they end up subscribing to multiple streams, they will often just buy the whole thing.
It's easy to publish on Notd – get started here.
