The Warriors' Dynasty is over. What is their direction?
The Warriors' Dynasty is over. What is their direction?
The Warriors have fallen short of the playoffs yet again. With Jimmy Butler's ACL tear midseason and talks of a potential Draymond Green trade, it's clear that the Warriors will very soon have to make an all-in move to win next season, otherwise it may be time to move past the Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr era.
But where should they head?
The Warriors have a solid roster currently. Jimmy Butler is on track to be available for the start of next season. They just traded for Kristaps Porzingis, and they have solid young pieces who may improve over the summer. Players like Gui Santos, Pat Spencer, and De'Anthony Melton stepped up in the absence of Curry and Butler. It's reasonable to think the Warriors would have made the playoffs if they weren't so injured.
But this doesn't really matter.
Steph Curry is 38 years old. Jimmy Butler is turning 37 this year. Draymond is 36 and showing major signs of regression. This team is very old. Players like Moses Moody and Kristaps Porzingis are bound to miss a lot of games next season. It's unlikely the Warriors will have a healthy team during the regular season, let alone going into the postseason.
And it may be fun to imagine the Warriors going and trading for Tyler Herro or Kevin Durant, but it's simply unrealistic.
Questions have arisen regarding Steve Kerr's future with the Warriors as a Head Coach.
This roster is simply not worth investing in.
What they should do:
The Warriors' situation is complicated. Their solution isn't to simply make a trade and sign some free agents.
The Warriors need to focus on preparing for the post-Steph Curry era. And how will they do this, you may ask?
Golden State has control of each of its first-round picks up to 2032, outside of 2030. With the current structure of their contracts and age, Steph, Draymond, and Jimmy will likely retire either after the 2026-27 season or after the 2027-28 season, a good time frame allowing for 1-2 more years of contention with their current core.
During these coming seasons, the Warriors need to focus on building up long-term valuable assets, whether it be through the draft, trading players who hold value elsewhere, or through player development of their young guys.
Building long-term assets while remaining competitive is a difficult balance to maintain, but the Warriors have proven to be a smart franchise that has pulled off crazier things.
The Warriors have very few players under contract for next season, so they need to pull off a miracle in order to build a solid and deep core.
It's time for the Warriors to prioritize their future, but not at the cost of Steph Curry's final years.
This bittersweet ending of the Warriors' dynasty marks the start of their rebuild.
It's time to enter a new era of Warriors basketball.
