Education is Our First Line of Defense

free note

I am a firm believer in education as the first line of defense against what we consider to be bad choices.

I am not a believer in the idea that we have to prevent bad choices or protect people from themselves.

I believe enough training and education allows people to make their own reasonably informed choices. But once training is done, it is not my job to police what happens next.

I don't agree with blanket bans. I think people's autonomy and control over their own lives matters.

That's why I'm such a big proponent of teaching AI in school. In order for kids to learn how to make "good" choices about how and when they use AI, we have to teach it directly, not just ban it and hope it goes away or pray they learn it by osmosis later on.

Technology is part of our lives. Learning to use it responsibly starts in Kindergarten, with short, focused 10 minute, age-appropriate lessons designed to help kids understand the Internet and the technological world around them. Those lessons eventually become integrated into everything else they are already doing.

Technology isn't going away. It's time for schools to stop pretending that it will.
