The dreamspace was still humming as they walked, but something about it felt different now. Off-kilter, maybe. Allison couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but it was as if the air was holding its breath.

After dinner, Allison went straight upstairs to her office to finish the client article she had been working on. It was due that night. Time was of the essence, and she worked feverishly for a few hours. Luckily, with about thirty minutes to spare, she made her deadline — though not without a familiar jolt of dread and anxiety as she pressed send. The little uploading spinner, the soft ding of the email sent. It was done.

Allison coasted to a stop outside The Jagged Cliff, her favorite local café tucked into the corner of a converted brick mill. The early afternoon sun glinted off the café windows, warm and bright. She locked her bike to the rack on the side of the building. The metal of the rack was already heating up in the summer sun — almost too hot to touch.
