On January 26, 2016, a significant turning point occurred when several key leaders, including Ammon Bundy and LaVoy Finicum, left the refuge in a two-vehicle convoy. State and federal authorities executed a traffic stop on U.S. Route 395. Ammon Bundy and several others in the first vehicle surrendered peacefully. However, Finicum, driving the second vehicle, refused to comply with orders and fled, leading to a pursuit. The pursuit ended when Finicum encountered a roadblock. Instead of stopping, Finicum drove his truck into a snowbank. What followed was a fatal confrontation during which LaVoy Finicum was shot and killed by Oregon State Police. This event marked a dramatic escalation of the standoff and became a major point of contention and investigation.
