Why I Write a New Story Every Day

People often ask where my story ideas come from.

The honest answer?

Sometimes... I have absolutely no idea.

Every morning, I begin with a single image. It might be beautiful, mysterious, whimsical, or completely ridiculous. I don't get to choose it, and that's the point.

I never skip an image.

Some mornings the story appears almost immediately. Other days I stare at the picture for quite a while, wondering what on earth I could possibly write. I'll make a cup of tea, put on some music, doodle in my notebook, or simply sit quietly and let my imagination wander. Eventually, something begins to emerge.

It isn't always easy.

But that's exactly why I do it.

As writers, we often talk about waiting for inspiration. I believe inspiration is wonderful—but I also believe we have a responsibility to keep our creative minds active and ready. Just as a musician practices scales or an athlete trains even when there isn't a competition, I believe writers should exercise their imagination.

This is one of the ways I do that.

Each story becomes a workout for my creativity. Every unexpected image challenges me to look beyond the obvious, ask new questions, and discover possibilities I might never have found if I had waited for the "perfect" idea.

The wonderful surprise is that these exercises rarely stay exercises for long.

Some become stories I'm genuinely proud of.

Some spark ideas for larger projects.

Others quietly teach me something about storytelling that I carry into my novels and screenplays.

Every one of them makes me a stronger writer.

More importantly, they remind me why I fell in love with storytelling in the first place.

Writing can become deadlines, revisions, marketing, publishing, and business. Those things matter—they're part of being a professional writer. But if we're not careful, they can slowly crowd out the simple joy of creating something because it delights our imagination.

This daily practice brings me back to that joy.

It's where I get to play.

To experiment.

To surprise myself.

To chase wonder without worrying whether an idea is too strange or too small.

Some of my favorite stories have come from images that, at first glance, seemed impossible to write.

That's a lesson I try to remember both on the page and in life.

Sometimes the ideas that challenge us the most become the stories we're most grateful we told.

So tomorrow morning, I'll do it again.

One random image.

One blank page.

One question.

What story is waiting here?
