The Storyteller's Notebook: Building the Writing Muscle One Story at a Time

Writers are told to read, study craft, take classes, seek feedback, and, of course, write. But what about simply practicing? Drummers have paradiddles. Athletes run drills. Dancers work at the barre. Through a daily experiment of creating stories from random images, I accidentally discovered my own version of the drill, and something unexpected began happening: my voice grew stronger, my instincts got faster, and I became more willing to follow my imagination into unfamiliar territory. Maybe not everything we write needs to become a finished product. Sometimes the story isn't what we're building. Sometimes we're building the storyteller.
