One of my favorite social media sites is plurk.com.

I am active on there very active it has a very large community and has been around for quite a while. It has a nice mix of old school customization with the profile, and wallpapers, and has a few extra features like direct messaging a whisper mode and a few other bonuses. it is gamified like many other sites, But its based on your activity and not your popularitity, plus it has a very old school Terms of Service agreement with no surprises.
