A Credit Rating is an important part of financial health. It affects qualification for a loan, credit card, mortgage, car financing, and other forms of credit. A good higher credit rating saves you money and a poor lower credit rating makes borrowing difficult and expensive or impossible.

In Canada, Credit Scores generally range from 300 to 900. The higher the score, the better credit looks to lenders.

1. 300–559: Poor — You may have difficulty qualifying for credit, and lenders may charge higher interest rates.

2. 560–659: Fair — You may qualify for some credit, but your choices could be limited.

3. 660–724: Good — You are generally in a stronger position when applying for credit.

4. 725–759: Very Good — Lenders are more likely to view you as a responsible borrower.

5. 760–900: Excellent — You demonstrate a strong history of managing credit responsibly.

The ranges are approximate. Credit bureaus and lenders may use different rating categories and approval requirements.

How to Build an Excellent Credit Rating

1. Pay every Bill on time. Payment history is an important factor in your credit score. Pay at least the minimum amount due on credit cards and loans by the due date. Whenever possible, pay the full credit card balance to avoid interest.

2. Keep credit card balances low. Try to use less than 30% of your available credit limit. For example, if your limit is $1,000, aim to keep your balance below $300. Lower utilization is generally better.

3. Borrow only what you can afford to repay. Avoid taking out loans simply because a lender offers them. Every loan creates a repayment obligation.

4. Keep older credit accounts in good standing. A longer history of responsible credit use can help your score. Think carefully before closing an older credit card, especially if it has no annual fee.

5. Apply for credit only when necessary. Too many credit applications in a short period can lower your score. Compare options before applying.

6. Check your credit reports. Review your reports for incorrect balances, unfamiliar accounts, or payments wrongly reported as late. In Canada, you can request reports from Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada.

How to Maintain Your Excellent Rating

Create a monthly budget, set payment reminders or automatic payments, and keep an emergency fund if possible. If you are struggling financially, contact your lender before missing a payment to discuss possible arrangements.

Remember, you do not need to carry debt or pay interest to build excellent credit. You need to demonstrate that you can manage credit responsibly over time.

An excellent credit rating is not built overnight. Consistent, sensible financial habits are the key to protecting it and giving yourself more borrowing options in the future.

The two main Credit Rating reporting agencies in Canada, are: Equifax https://www.equifax.ca/personal/ and TransUnion https://www.transunion.ca

My advice: Create accounts on both official websites. Check that your name, addresses, loans, credit cards and payment history are correct.

You can check Free Credit Score and Free Credit Report without affecting your credit score. And Review accounts, payment history and other credit information. The two bureaus may show different scores because their information and scoring methods can differ.

One alternative to Credit Cards, is a Prepaid Card accepted, such as KOHO.

However, if you do use KOHO, or any other Prepaid Card, always have a backup Credit Card or Cash, in case a Merchant does not accept KOHO (Mastercard).
