Chapter 1

free note

As the whole world was bustling around, making last-minute preparations on Christmas Eve, one child, Benjamin Evans, was peering through the dimly lit window display of the toy store. There it sat, the brand new LEGO® set, the Eiffel Tower in the center of the window attracting any eye that passed. Even though many people may laugh, thinking the 18-year-old was too old for toys, Ben had always loved Lego sets. He wondered what it would be like to have a brand new one, instead of a used, handed-down kit with pieces missing

Ben looked down at his cracked-up, cheap watch, that had been passed through his family for generations, and thought, “Oh no. My parents are gonna kill me if I don’t get home soon,” as he started into a run toward the alley across the street, next to the local barbershop. He stopped running as he got to a door to his right. He looked up and marveled at the moon, shining rays of light across the paved ground.

Ben put his hand on the cold doorknob, twisted it, and tried not to make any noise as the door screeched open. He looked out into the dark living area to check if anyone was up. He noticed there didn’t seem to be anyone still up, so he reached over and flipped up the beat-up light switch, which turned on a rickety, flickering light fixture.

He crept to his and his sister's little room in the corner, carefully stepped over Lily, and laid down on the old air mattress, he closed his eyes, thinking that tomorrow might be different, a change of pace for the Evans. As he dozed off, all he could think was that he wanted, and needed a change.

---------------------------

Ben woke up unexpectedly; he heard something. He got up and stumbled out of his room to see if anything was going on. Nothing was happening, his dad was just telling Ben’s mom bye before he went to work. Ben was still a little disappointed, even though he knew a couple of weeks before that his dad had to work on Christmas. He hugged his dad and told him bye.

Ben’s mom said, “Hey Ben, why don’t you take your sister for a walk around town?”

Ben yelled for his sister, “ Hey Lily, get in here. I have to take you for a walk.” She came out of her room looking as though she had just woken up. She wiped some sleep from her eyes.

She looked up and sighed, “I guess. I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”

Ben leaned down and hugged his mom, he let her kiss him on the cheek. His mom called after them as they were walking out of the front door, “Be back before dark! Be safe and have a good time.”

As Ben and Lily were walking down the sidewalk, Ben pointed out the LEGO® set that he had been looking at the night before.

Lily laughed, “ Seriously Ben? You need to grow up. Can’t you just be happy with what you have?” Ben looked down, and nodded, trying to hide the fact that he still really wanted it.

Ben looked at his watch, and said, “ Oh, come on. Why can’t I ever keep track of time? It's time to head home Lily!”
