Two Altars, One Test

Modernity did not abolish worship. It moved the furniture.
St. Boniface did not debate Thor into retirement. Around 723, near Geismar, he put an axe into Donar's Oak and waited. Willibald's Vita Bonifatii is the source. The crowd expected the god to answer. The tree came down. Timber from the shrine went into a chapel. The method is older than the saint: make the claimed god defend his own ground in public.
A recent essay-video tries that method on two living shrines. One is the anti-Hitler: not the historical man, the cosmic role assigned to him after 1945. The other is scientism: not the laboratory, the habit of treating credentials and abstracts as holy orders. Parts of the argument are worth keeping. Parts repeat the flattening they claim to oppose. The way through is not applause and it is not the usual correction that this is merely the postwar human-rights consensus. The way through is four tests.
I. Highest good: received or invented
No one acts without a ranking of goods. If the ranking is received, God, the given moral law, the person as an end, you can still betray it. You cannot rewrite it at will. If the ranking is invented, the inventor becomes the priest. That is the only piece of the "everyone is an idolater by default" line that survives contact with Christian moral theology. The rest is a slogan.
Do not hang the point on a Latin verb. Cicero derived religio from relegere, to go over the rites again. Lactantius and Augustine preferred religare, to bind. The video picks the second and presents it as settled. It is not. Cite both derivations or cite neither. The claim you need does not live in the dictionary. A good that cannot be cross-examined is functioning as a god, whether or not anyone kneels.
II. The evidence layer, or the abstract
This is the stronger half of the video, and it does not need a dictator to stand up.
"Trust the science" is not a method. Replication, error bars, and a statement of what would kill the claim: that is a method. When the reply to an argument is "source?" followed by a glance at the author block, you are watching ordination. Specialization is real. No person masters every field. That fact explains why people reach for institutions. It does not license replacing the data layer with a press release.
The usual reply, that we must trust institutions because the material is hard, assumes the point in dispute. Hard material is the reason you show the layer. If the layer cannot be shown, you do not have science. You have a clergy with better letterhead. Skip the layer, treat credentials as ordination papers, punish dissent as heresy: that is the failure signature. Demand the test and the falsification condition instead.
III. Which taboo survives the collision
The grooming-gang cases are the test the video wants. The number it used almost ruins the test.
The Jay Report on Rotherham (2014) gave a conservative local estimate of about 1,400 children exploited between 1997 and 2013. Later police work under Operation Stovewood identified more than a thousand victims in that town alone and hundreds of rape offenses. Rochdale, Telford, Oxford, Oldham: same pattern, locally documented. Agencies moved slowly. The ethnicity of many offenders had been treated as a third rail. The 2022 Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse and Baroness Casey's 2025 national audit both said there is still no reliable national total. Data systems were built not to answer the question.
The figure of 250,000 British girls is not a count. It is an extrapolation associated with Lord Pearson and with similar scaling by others, including a range Sarah Champion later called unreliable. Do not carry that number. A hostile reader will use it to throw out the rest.
You do not need a national census to see the ranking of goods. A movement that spent a decade teaching that women's testimony is decisive went quiet when the perpetrators were the wrong kind of men and the victims were the wrong kind of girls. That is not a statistics problem. The accusation that ends a career faster than the crime is the real creed. Run that test in a newsroom, a campus, or an agency and you will find out what may not be touched.
IV. Leave the monster in the archive
Here the video cuts itself.
"Literally Hitler" is often not a historical sentence. It is a heresy charge. A finite man is a poor Satan. Real people are mixed. Absolute evil is not. The postwar West also built speech rules, career rules, and ritual disclaimers around that name that do not attach to other mass killers with the same heat. Those observations hold.
None of them licenses the next step: sanding the record until the cartoon and the man change places. The Holocaust, the war of conquest, and the racial state are not items you set beside tax policy and call nuance. If the method requires the line "he was obviously a socialist" as a gotcha, the method has failed its own rule. The party used socialist language, smashed independent unions, murdered the left, and made terms with industrial capital. Say the whole sentence or drop the line.
Condemning the myth does not require defending the man. The moment you use a dictator as metaphysics, two shops open. One sees him in every border argument. The other hears permission to say the crimes were oversold. Both shops live off the same refusal: the refusal to leave a criminal in history.
What the axe is for
Boniface had a church behind him, Frankish power at his back, and a public that still believed gods could be tested in daylight. You do not. Swinging at a living shrine without that backing is not always courage. Sometimes it is only a booking.
The usable inheritance is smaller. Name the good. Demand the layer. Watch which taboo wins a collision. Leave history to the archive. Modernity did not abolish altars. It relocated them. One altar is a political devil defined as the inverse of a mid-century dictator. Another is the credential as sacrament. Both fail the same test. They punish questions faster than they survive them.
Note
This note answers a popular video essay that used St. Boniface as a frame for two modern idols. The historical claims on Boniface follow Willibald. The Rotherham figures follow the Jay Report (2014) and subsequent Operation Stovewood reporting. The 250,000 national estimate is treated as advocacy arithmetic, not as official data, consistent with later fact-checks and with the limits stated by the 2022 national inquiry and the 2025 Casey audit. Etymologies of religio follow Cicero (relegere) and Lactantius/Augustine (religare).
