Blockchain & Winter & Healthcare: Some freeze, others learn to ski #1
Blockchain- too early for the market, too non-sense, too much against the status quo.. Or?
Healthcare disruption is inevitable. High costs, difficult access for many, inefficiencies, etc. (you name it) leads to worse outcomes compared to other developed nations.
What could possibly blockchain help with?
A: Data access
Data for me (doc), you, other one who you want to join the party :) One of the major challenges I face as a doc is access to your healthcare data when you are in the need of immediate help. How so? Well, the software platforms communicate together currently on a very limited basis (shocking, I know).
What are the consequences? Data access via memory from your relatives, or from doc to doc/nurse to nurse sign out about your medical conditions, allergies, meds you are taking. This leads to delayed access to labs, imaging... Why does this matter? I understand you better when I see the trends over time, results, I can plan and give you appropriate treatment faster. Solution? Blockchain enables me to access your data anytime. You may be asking- could AI take over your decision making? Great question. Maybe- someday. But not now. The biological systems remain too complex to read the book, the gray zone is my zone of operation and it's rather small to allow to safely train AI systems - for now.
A food for thought: Currently your data is ... well it should be you but the current owner is unknown to you. Similarly when you participate in clinical trials. So why would you want to become owner of your data? Could you perhaps "rent" your data to the third parties that want to use your data for research purposes?
