If Jesus can be holy then so can I
“Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could He die, and only by dying could He break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could He set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; He came to help the descendants of Abraham. Therefore, it was necessary for Him to be made in every respect like us, His brothers and sisters, so that He could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then He could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. Since He Himself has gone through suffering and testing, He is able to help us when we are being tested.” -Hebrews 2.14-18 NLT italics added.
If Jesus could be holy then so can I. How? It’s too hard and seemingly unattainable, we could say. Some might say, Jesus is God, so of course He cannot sin. But as we read in this passage in Hebrews 2 we see that we are freed from sin and death because Jesus (YHWH) became a human being and as a Man He defeated sin and death.
His sinless life and His resurrection prove He is victorious! Praise God! We trust in Him and proclaim, “He is my God and I will trust in Him”. We learn from His example. He told His disciples that He only spoke what He heard the Father speak and He only did what He saw the Father do (John 5:19). We have the Word of God and we have the Holy Spirit to give us His Words and presence. As we spend time in His presence (reading and meditating on the Word, thinking of Him and His ministry as a Man, singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to each other), He empowers us and transforms us to into conformity with His nature. This renewal prepares us to see Him face to face and live because a mind at enmity with God cannot see Him and live. (Exodus 33:20)
The mercy and grace of our God and Savior is awesome and the promise of His transforming victory in our lives and in the lives of all who seek His face is beautiful and gives us a freedom and peace today and a fervent hope for tomorrow.
If you’re struggling with something today, whether a destructive habit or depressive thoughts, “…turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full on His wonderful face and the things of this earth will grow strangely dim in the Light of His glory and grace…” His promises of victory are sure. He will empower you to overcome any sin, only look to Him. Don’t make the mistake of fighting in your own strength and “will power”. Only He can provide lasting and true victory. (Matthew 11:28-30).
