Part I: The Introduction

I'm sure you have a lot of questions, but please, let me try my best to answer them all. Firstly, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jessella Fetcher, someone who comes down from a long line of Fetchers. Literally. It's what we do-it's our job. I'll go into further explanation about that later. I'm going to assume that you live above ground, like most humans do. I'm also going to assume that you know that, long ago, people used to live in caves as a way to shelter from the elements, express themselves through different forms of art, and to store items such as food and valuables. But that's just to name a few reasons of course. Over time, however, humans have adapted. Some of us got sick of living in caves-which is understandable. As people started to settle above ground, villages were created. Then cities. Then kingdoms. People also began paying taxes...? And that doesn't make any sense since a lot of that money ends up going to the rich people anyway. But that doesn't matter for right now. What matters is why some of us decided to live above, and why some of us decided to live below. Over time, as these civilizations above ground grew, it seemed like a lot of negative things began to take over. Plagues. War. Invasions. It's a scary world out there. So some people decided to take safety measures. While everyone went ahead on the surface, we stayed behind below the surface. And no, we're not cowards. We're just...careful. And as we went through generations, our bodies began to adjust to our environments. We're agile. Quick-thinking. We can also see in the dark, though squishing the juices of glowworms and letting them drop directly onto your eyes can help enhance your vision, so there's a fun fact. Oh, and we're also hairy. My mom is the hairiest person I know. And that's normal here. But on the surface it's not, I know. You above-ground people are so complicated. What's wrong with a little hair? Sorry-I'm getting off-topic. I'm sure you're wondering what we eat. What we drink. We have a pond full of fish, even though we have no idea where the fish came from. If you're sick of fish, however, you can always try to eat a bat. They can be hard to catch though, so we normally just don't even try to grab one. We have the bugs, like the glowworms, but nobody really eats those either. We have numerous ponds and waterfalls throughout the cave systems that we drink and bathe from. If we want more food sources, however, that's when my family comes into play. Our last name is Fetcher for a reason. Long ago, our family was selected to be the ones to fetch things from the surface world, and since then we've been the best at our job. We gather food for our civilization. Clothes and blankets to make us feel warmer. Even toys for the children. As a Fetcher, it was our duty to take anything we could from those who lived above us. It's not like they'd miss their things anyway. So we're not completely independent, no. But we're independent enough. Enough for us to survive and thrive. There are over a thousand people who live in the cave systems underneath Cambiot. We're fine for the most part. However, we are pale because we don't get much sun. There are a few spots within the systems where the sun's rays do peek through, but as I said, our bodies have adapted to living in the dark. Only the Fetchers are used to being in sunlight for long periods. Our skin is pale, yes, but more tan than the rest. That's how we're different. Oh-and speaking of different-I'm sure you're wondering how we communicate compared to everyone else. Each and every person who lives in the caves has their click. The type of click that you do with your mouth. It's like a name. Each person has their clicking pattern, which helps if we ever get separated. We are also fluent in English because the Fetcher family has taught it to everyone over time. We hear it from the people above the surface and then repeat it to our people. It spreads around quickly, you know. As languages do. So did I cover everything? Do you have any more questions? Well-I'm sure you do, but I'll have to answer them some other time. Right now I have some things to fetch. It's a big responsibility, you know. I have to do my best...especially since a whole civilization is counting on me and my family.
