Super Greens: Are They Really the Next Wellness Miracle?

Over the last couple of years super greens have become the newest trend for health gurus and lifestyle influencers. With this craze many people have become obsessed with the super greens and making sure they drink them. I have even succumbed to the super green frenzy and own three containers of Bloom super greens in three assorted flavors. Recently I have been wondering if these super greens are actually benefiting my health. Disclaimer: I am not a registered dietitian and take everything I say in this article with a grain of salt.

During this article we will be focusing on Bloom Nutrition solely. Mostly because this is the most famous brand of super greens of which I am aware. From the brands website, they claim to be plant based, gluten free, and dairy free. They claim their product will relieve bloating, support gut health (what does gut health mean), and promote energy. Their ingredient list shows ideas like fiber blend, green superfood blend, pre- and pro-biotics, fruit and vegetable blend, antioxidant beauty blend, digestive enzyme blend, and lastly adaptogenic blend. Many of these blends seem unnecessary, an example would be the beauty blend. This product is mostly marketed to women, so it does make sense on a business side. Have beauty elements in your product to bring in more cliental and in return make more money. But at the end of the day what are medical professionals saying about super greens and what they are about?

Many different studies have shown that a person should consume three to four servings of vegetables to get the greatest amount of health benefits. The Cleveland Clinic (2024) talked to a registered dietitian named Julia Zumpano. Zumpano suggests that you look at your current diet and what you eat every day. One you figure out your diet goals and evaluate what you need in your diet that super green powers may be good for a person that has a challenging time eating fruits and vegetables (clevelandclinic.org, 2024). Their article also highlights the benefits of drinking any type of super greens like it being a natural energy boost, it helps the gut health (again, gut health? Is this something I need to research?) and immune system and may reduce your risk of chronic diseases. Another big benefit Zumpano highlights is that drinking super greens is more convenient than eating your vegetables and fruit normally (clevelandclinic.org, 2024).

An article by Calloway Cook (2022), with medical reviewer DJ Mazzoni, RD, reviewed Bloom Nutrition and evaluation on what people really want to know about. Are the ingredients healthy? How do they taste? Does it really do the things it claims? Well, the verdict is that there are no toxic ingredients in 42 (yes, I said 42) active ingredients. Even though it only has 1.606g of super greens or about 1 cup of cooked beans. Cook (2022) highlights though that there has been a study that say a fruit and vegetable coventrate supplementation could help people reduce the burden of heart disease. There article suggests that drinking super greens could be beneficial to people that do not eat enough fruit or vegetables. Cook (2022) had a co-worker try Bloom for a week and he said that the strawberry kiwi did not taste "seaweedy" like other super greens he had tried. While Cook personally did not give Bloom a thumbs up, her coworker did. This just shows me that it depends on the person whether they want to drink super greens or not.

My personal experience with super greens and Bloom Nutrition has been positive so far. I will be honest and say that I do not get enough fruit and vegetables into my diet. But I have also had chronic health conditions in my life. One top of that, I am a cancer survivor. So, for me it is mostly about feeling good about myself and not giving up on my health. It is harder to stay healthy once you have been sick for so long. So, my opinion on super greens is that if you feel like you are not getting the nutrients that you need from your meals or over the counter vitamins then you should try drinking suer greens. Now, my experience has not always been great. I have learned to mix 8oz of juice with 16oz of water and mix my scoop of greens and then blend it really well to get me to drink it, but you will find a way to make drinking them a fun activity for you that you enjoy.

Well, Bloom Nutrition and super greens in general are okay. Not great but not bad. Nothing about Bloom Nutrition is going to hurt you if you drink it but we are wary of other brands that we have not researched yet. You may even find that you like a different brand better. We talked about what super greens are and how there is no formal research on them because vitamins and supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). How people are not getting enough nutrients for vegetables or fruit, Then, we had two testimonials about Bloom Nutrition, one from the author and one from the Illuminate Labs crew. From Tik Tok fame to real like usage, Bloom is standing the test time when it comes to super greens.
