Faith in Anime
I. Introduction
- Are you a girl in your 20s? Well, even if you’re not, you can still enjoy this one.
- Let me tell you about NANA. It’s an anime about two women who move to Tokyo to chase their dreams—different dreams, but they always end up supporting each other. Nana O is a wannabe rock singer, while Nana K dreams of a big house and a loving family. (Honestly, that dream seems a little naive once the story gets rolling—like, girl, what happens after?) Still, NANA is a heartfelt and relatable story about friendship, ambition, and the messy, emotional twists of life. Two of my friends recommended it to me, and I’m glad they did. The storytelling flows beautifully between both Nanas, making you feel like they’re your own best friends by the end.
II. Why NANA Stands Out
- NANA is a slice-of-life anime that beautifully blends comedy and drama while exploring the struggles of relationships—both romantic and platonic. It captures the ups and downs of growing up, falling in love, and finding yourself in a big city that doesn’t always care.
- One of the most iconic moments? Nana K answering the phone with her cheerful, drawn-out “Hellllooooo! It’s Nana!” It perfectly sums up her bubbly, hopeful personality and sets the tone for the emotional rollercoaster that follows.
- The overall tone of NANA is a nostalgic mix of realism and melancholy—it feels raw and grounded, yet somehow comforting. It reminds you of your own early-twenties chaos, friendships, and dreams that felt larger than life..
III. The Reality and Creative Liberty
- NANA tells the story of two women living completely different lives yet somehow ending up with similar emotional outcomes—and that’s what makes it so captivating. The series captures the raw reality of love, showing how it can both make and break you.
- Nana O often comes across as self-centered, chasing her dreams while unintentionally hurting those who care for her. Still, her friends remain by her side, offering unwavering support. On the other hand, Nana K is unapologetically herself—sweet, emotional, and endlessly hopeful—but her inability to recognize red flags made me pause and reflect on how love can sometimes cloud judgment.
- Even the supporting characters have depth and purpose. They aren’t just background fillers or NPCs; each one contributes to the story’s emotional weight and the two Nanas’ personal growth. Their experiences intertwine, creating a world that feels lived-in and painfully real.
