Chapter 1: Embracing Your Writer's Voice

What is Your Writer's Voice?

Let's talk about your writer's voice. I have a fascinating view of a writer's voice. I believe this is a part of you and another part of your being. A system not much different than your muscular system, requiring work, support, and nurturing to grow in size and strength. And, like your personal voice, your writer's voice has a character and persona. For me, mine is Mystic Scribe©. She has a personality and presence that is, in many ways, very different from my everyday life. I give her that freedom so that my writing can come to life without my blocks and mental processes getting in the way. Part of my writing practice has been embracing and developing her so my stories can grow. Your writer's voice is more than just how you combine words and build paragraphs—it's your essence as a storyteller. It's the unique filter through which you process your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. It combines your personality, background, worldview, and how you see and interact with the world around you. Let's say this aloud - your voice breathes life into your stories and comes to life in every word you write! It's the thing that makes your writing unmistakably yours. So, who is your writer's voice?

Finding Your Writer's Voice

Finding your writer's voice takes time. It doesn't just happen all at once. It's more of a process that grows with you as you write. And it takes a commitment to allow that growth to occur. Just like the work it takes to build the muscle in your body, you have to work to grow that voice within you. And while some people become bodybuilders, taking their growth dedication to extreme levels, others tone their muscles differently. Your writer's voice will grow at the level of your commitment to your process. You can't just expect to snap your fingers and have it appear. As I said, like training your body, your writing needs practice to get stronger. It requires patience, consistency, and an openness to let your voice develop naturally. The more you write, the more transparent and more authentic your voice will become.

To develop as a writer, you have to write every day.

I shared this before and asked: How many of you have heard this? I believe it is true that you have to exercise your writer's voice. But I don't believe in writing just to write. The key to discovering your writer's voice lies in consistency - discipline. Writing regularly helps you connect with that part of yourself, that voice, that's uniquely yours. If you think of it as a muscle, the more you exercise it, the stronger it becomes. When you write consistently, you start noticing patterns, rhythms, and tones in your work that reflect who you are as a storyteller. This is where your authenticity begins to shine through. Your voice isn't about a set of rules or guidelines, nor is it like anyone else's —it's an extension of who you are, how you write, and the culmination of your experiences, perspective, and emotions. You cultivate it over time by showing up, writing, and embracing your personal creative process.

In this journey, the most important thing to remember is not to rush it. Your writer's voice will evolve. It's a dynamic, living thing that grows as you do. As you continue to explore, write, and push your boundaries, your voice will come to life correctly.

As you refine this voice, you'll find that writing becomes more natural. It won't feel like forcing your words; you'll channel something uniquely yours. You have to trust that the more you practice, the more your writer's voice will become something you use and that flows naturally through you, empowering you to create authentic and meaningful stories.

Finding your writer's voice is about stepping into your true self as a writer. It's about embracing who you are, your quirks, your style, and what makes your perspective unique. It takes time, but once you find it, it'll feel like an undeniable force that will carry you through every story you write. So, trust in the process and yourself—your voice is waiting to be discovered.

Why It's Important to Connect with Your Voice

Think of connecting with your writer's voice as tuning a guitar—it's not something you can do once and forget about. You have to tune your guitar all the time. As a matter of fact, the more you use the guitar, the more you'll have to tune it. The process takes a lot of effort as you build consistency. Just as an untuned guitar sounds off-key as you refine your playing, your writing can feel the same. Disjointed, without themes or forced as you connect to and build your voice. By committing to building your voice, you are building your instrument by dedicating time to practicing your writing. And your voice becomes more apparent, strong, sharper, and distinct.

Connecting with your writer's voice gives you the courage to write authentically. When you trust your voice, you unlock your true potential as a storyteller. Your writer's voice is the force that drives your creativity. Your voice is what keeps you going during the ups and downs of writing. It's not just about getting the words right but about expressing yourself in a way that connects with readers.

Your voice is unique because no one else has the same experiences and perspectives. The more you trust your voice, the more natural your writing will feel. Over time, it will become more manageable, and your stories will feel more genuine.

Finding your voice takes time. It may feel slow at first, but the benefits are worth it. When you fully embrace your voice, you'll find that your writing feels more comfortable, more fluid, and more like an extension of who you are. And that, in turn, will make your writing more engaging, relatable, and unforgettable.

In this book, you will follow a nine-step process designed to help you establish a lasting and meaningful writing practice. We start by creating a writing space that fuels your creativity, then move on to discovering and trusting your own unique writer's voice. You'll learn how to tap into your creative flow every day, building a consistent routine while embracing imperfection along the way. As you progress, you’ll make writing an essential part of your life, and through speaking with your writer’s voice and staying connected to your creativity, you’ll reflect on your journey and adjust your approach as needed. You'll also explore how to speak and commune with your writer's voice, stay connected to your creativity, and reflect on your progress as you adjust your approach. Each step will help you develop a deeper connection to your writing and empower you to show up consistently as a storyteller.

In the next chapter, we'll explore how to tap into your creative stream, build the energy you need to fuel your writing, and deepen your connection with the stories you want to tell. The stronger your connection to your writer's voice, the more powerful your creative flow will become.
