Liturgical Relativism: Holding hands during Mass and Liturgical Dancing
Liturgical relativism is definitely concerning. The orans posture and holding hands from the faithful and laity and liturgical dancing. Both have been condemned since 1975 with the issuance of Notitiae 11. They are not in the rubrics and most of all: not reverent. FYI I am a NO.
Regarding liturgical dancing, it can only be taken place outside of the liturgy, including the Mass. In 2 Samuel 6, David danced in the streets but not in the Temple.
According to Notitiae 11 (1975), holding hands from the faithful and laity was a spontaneous addition, but this has never been prescribed in the liturgical rubrics. This is something that I have seen not only with the "Our Father" but also "And with your spirit."
Both create the notion of an anthropocentric (human-focus) focus of the Mass, which is contrary to what the Mass actually is: Christocentric. Christ at the center.
Reverence goes both internal and external. Full, undivided attention towards Christ for the sacrifice that He made on the Cross: far greater than any temporal sacrifice. Recognizing the fear of the Lord: respecting the Lord for all and everything He is, including His kingship.
We give Our Lord our due for His sacrifice. It is not legalism but having a deeper understanding of the enormity of His sacrifice on the Cross but also the promises of Christ by His resurrection: being humble to Our Almighty God. Mass is not about us but for the Lord.
