The Change in Notre Dame and the Consequences
The issue of the University of Notre Dame speaks to a larger issue with Catholic education in the United States. A nominalist approach- abstract ideas being reduced to names and slogans- and increasing conformity to the world.
In 1965, Vatican 2 issued Gravissimum educationis, regarding on Christian education. Two years later, the Land O'Lakes Statement came out.
One of the aspects of the Land O'Lakes Statement is having full autonomy and academic freedom, including in the face of the Church.
Another problem is treating Catholicism as more of a face and Catholic universities and colleges as more as learning institutions.
While the Land O'Lakes Statement talked about the need to view the world from a Catholic perspective in various fields and a special service for the Church and living out the faith, nothing is mentioned on the need for evangelization.
That is contrary to what Gravissimum educationis brought up in section 2, which tied with education and evangelization.
