The mother of the children Andrea Kennedy-Yates was born on July 3rd, 1964 in Texas before she became known for the crimes, she struggled with her mental health when she was 17 she told a friend about her suicidal thoughts, she also struggled with depression and bulimia. In the summer of 1989 she met Rusty her soon to be husband but she had no idea the hell that was about to happen because in the late 1980’s while he was in college he met Michael Woroniecki (remember his name!). They got married April 17th,1993 but sadly for Andrea since they are both devoted Christian’s they agreed “they will have as many children as god lets them have” so they had their first baby 1994 named Noah but sadly with their 4th child Luke her depression resurfaced this is when it goes down hill. On June 17th, 1999 she attempted suicide by overdosing on pills which lead to her being hospitalized and prescribed antidepressants. But sadly after her release, Yates begged Rusty to let her die as she held a knife up to her neck. Once again hospitalized, she was given several medications, including Haldol her condition improved immediately, and she was prescribed it upon her release.

Then Summer of 1999 after two suicide attempts and two psychiatric breakdowns in July she was diagnosed with postpartum psychosis. Yates's first psychiatrist, Dr. Eileen Starbranch, testified that she urged her and Rusty not to have any more children, as it would "guarantee future psychotic depression." But with them not believing in birth control like the pill or condoms, they conceived their fifth and final child a little girl named Mary born in November 20000 approximately seven weeks after her discharge.Yates stopped taking Haldol in March 2000 8 months before Mary was born. Rusty further recalled thinking that Andrea's postpartum depression and psychosis was like the "flu," where there was a "50/50 chance that if she has another child, she'll relapse.""If the risk of having another child was the flu that was a risk worth taking," he said. "I just thought, 'Okay, she'll get sick. Worst case, it’ll be like a flu. She'll get treated with the same medicines that worked for her before and we'll be done.' "Andrea's condition ultimately worsened, and she "went from being what seemed like normal to in a worse state," Rusty recalled."She was completely out of it," he said. "I didn’t know it at the time, but Andrea was having visual hallucinations, auditory hallucinations, and it led to the delusions she had of having the devil in her."

Its claimed that she was coping well and doing well but then sadly her dad passed away on March 12th,2001 which led her stopping taking medication, self harm, reading the bible feverishly, and stopped feeding Mary.She became so incapacitated that she required immediate hospitalization. On April 1, 2001, Yates came under the care of Dr. Mohammed Saeed she was treated and released. On May 3, 2001, 2 months and 17 days before the murders she degenerated back into a "near catatonic" state and filled the bathtub in the middle of the day; she would later confess to police that she had planned to drown the children that day but had decided against doing it then. Yates was hospitalized the next day after a scheduled doctor visit; her psychiatrist determined she was probably suicidal and assumed she had filled the tub to drown herself because of her past with suicidal tendency’s. I feel like if the police warned her psychologist or Rusty about her confession none of this would have happened. Speaking of Doctor Saeed, its claimed that according to testimony at Andrea's trial, doctors specifically advised Rusty to not leave Andrea alone with the children in the midst of her depression and psychosis. Andrea's psychiatrist Dr. Mohammad Saeed wrote that after he treated Andrea in 2001, he alerted Rusty of this advice, according to Dr. Park Dietz's testimony. Rusty, his mother and mother-in-law had been working together to watch the kids and Andrea. But on June 20, 2001 the day of the murders, Rusty left work in the morning approximately an hour before his mother was set to arrive. Shortly after Rusty left, Andrea drowned her children. I wont be talking about the actual murders of the children and what occurred because it can be very graphic for some people and can be a sensitive topic for some people like I know for me it is.

You may be wondering what caused all of this well remember in the beginning how I brought up Micheal Woroniecki, well he preached rigid, authoritarian, and doomsday doctrines, claiming women were born in sin, modern society was evil, and children not raised perfectly under his strict definitions were doomed to hellfire. Which the couple deeply absorbed these dogmas and the time of the murders, Andrea's fractured, psychotic mind warped these religious warnings into the delusion that killing her children was the only way to save their souls from eternal damnation before she committed suicide. Woroniecki’s intense psychological manipulation and apocalyptic messaging severely exacerbated her detachment from reality. But Woroniecki claims otherwise, he claims he did nothing wrong and simply denied any responsibility for Andrea Yates drowning her five children in 2001. He stated that calling his fire-and-brimstone messaging a cause for the tragedy was "ridiculous", maintaining that he merely shared religious guidance and warned her husband, Rusty Yates, about the family's need.He has said this "I hold him responsible for the drownings but I also hold Andrea responsible. God knows what we shared with those people”. Now lets talk about her trial after confessing to her crimes, in March 2002 Andrea was convicted of Capital Murder and was sentenced to life in prison. But then in 2005 her conviction was over-turned because of a prosecution medical expert gave false testimony regarding a non-existent Law & Order episode. So in 2006, a whole new jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity, agreeing she suffered from severe postpartum psychosis and severe depression at the time of the 2001 murders. She has stayed in the Kerrville State Hospital in Texas,she routinely waives her annual right to a competency review hearing that could pursue her release, choosing instead to stay institutionalized.

Alright now, for a deep dive into why I believe her husband should have also been found guilty and sent to prison. "Andrea's condition ultimately worsened, and she "went from being what seemed like normal to in a worse state," Rusty recalled.” Which is CRAZY to me because her doctors explicitly instructed that Andrea should never be left alone or unattended with the children. In the weeks leading up to the tragedy, Rusty began leaving her alone for short periods to foster independence, directly violating those instructions. It’s also stated that he had no idea how bad her mental conditions were, like why else would she be on a NUMEROUS amounts of medications, self harmed, been to countless amounts of hospitals for her mental heath, been asked of you her husband to NEVER leave her alone or be unattended with the children. He obviously was never serious about her taking medication because if he was she would have never skipped her meds, take half doses, hid them or flush them down the toilet. I myself take mental health medication (I take 4 different mediations daily) and my husband always checks in on my mental health, my medications, makes sure I take them, has helped me with booking appointments with my psychiatrist and a therapist. And I always know if i needed extra help he’s there to help me but in this case it feels like he didn’t care at all like what Michael Woroniecki was telling them/him was the key to help but in reality that was only making it worse. Yes I know he wasn’t the one that drowned the kids physically but he still had a hand in the conditions of his wife/family.
