Let’s Do A Thought Experiment

Assume, for the sake of argument, that the scientific majority is right about many lower-level biological facts but wrong at the higher macro level about unguided sufficiency. Assume they correctly observe variation, mutation, selection, drift, adaptation, and molecular patterning, yet incorrectly conclude that these are enough to explain the origin of major biological architectures and life itself.

If that were true, the error would not likely be simple stupidity. It would be a deeper kind of blindness.

What kind of blindness would it be?

It would be framework blindness.

That means people are not blind to data. They are blind to the limits of the interpretive frame through which they read the data.

They would still see:

  • fossils
  • genes
  • mutations
  • adaptation
  • nested patterns
  • sequence similarities

But they would misread what those things establish. They would confuse:

  • pattern with cause
  • mechanism with sufficiency
  • professional consensus with causal closure
  • methodological restriction with truth

That is a serious error, but not a childish one. It is the kind of error smart institutions make when they stop questioning their own starting assumptions.

Could it be indoctrination?

Yes, but that word has to be used carefully.

If by indoctrination you mean crude brainwashing, that is too simple.

If by indoctrination you mean a long educational process in which one framework is installed as the only respectable way to think, then yes, that is plausible.

A scientist can be trained from the beginning to assume:

  • only material causes count as real explanations
  • design is never a live option
  • unguided process must be sufficient in principle
  • unresolved questions are future triumphs, not present limits

That does not require malice. It only requires a system that rewards one type of reasoning and filters out another.

So the blindness could be partly due to education. Not because scientists are unintelligent, but because they are socially and professionally formed inside a narrow cause-screen.

Could it be ignorance?

At one level, yes. But it does not mean ignorance in the ordinary sense.

Knowledge of facts. Often, the people involved know many facts.

The more profound issue would be ignorance of category boundaries:

  • not seeing where observation ends, and inference begins
  • not seeing where valid lower-level science gets stretched into higher-level claims
  • not seeing when a methodological rule has turned into a metaphysical commitment

So the ignorance, if present, would be philosophical and forensic, not merely technical.

Could it be arrogance?

Yes, and perhaps this is the most dangerous form.

It would be arrogant to assume:

  • our method is neutral
  • Our framework is self-evidently complete
  • Our dissenters are ignorant before they speak
  • unresolved problems are too small to threaten the larger system
  • consensus itself is a sign of closure

That kind of arrogance usually doesn't look loud or emotional. It often looks calm, credentialed, and professional.

It is the arrogance of a closed system that no longer feels the need to reopen its foundational questions.

Could it be something else?

Yes. It could also be a mixture of several forces working together.

Institutional inertia

When textbooks, grants, journals, and careers incorporate a framework, challenging it becomes a costly endeavor.

Methodological habit

People begin by using a method, then gradually forget that it is a method and start treating it like reality itself.

Fear of reputational cost

Even if some scientists have doubts about higher-level sufficiency, many will never voice them publicly because the social and professional costs are high.

Psychological comfort

A closed explanatory system gives people confidence. It reduces uncertainty. It keeps the intellectual world manageable.

Spiritual resistance

If the thought experiment is framed theologically, then yes, one would also have to consider that some blindness may be moral or spiritual, not merely intellectual. In that frame, the issue is not lack of evidence alone, but resistance to what the evidence may imply.

The deepest possibility

The worst blindness is seeing the truth but interpreting it through a lens that can't accept its implications.

That is more serious than ignorance. It is disciplined misreading.

In that case, the problem would not be that scientists know nothing. The problem is that they know many things within a system that has predetermined what counts as an acceptable answer.

The Conclusion

If the scientific majority were wrong at the macro level, the likely cause would not be mere lack of intelligence. It would be a compound blindness made of:

  • educational conditioning
  • institutional reinforcement
  • philosophical narrowing
  • professional pressure
  • and, depending on one’s worldview, moral or spiritual resistance

Such blindness can exist even in highly trained people. In fact, it is often strongest there, because the more successful the system becomes at lower levels, the easier it is to assume it must also be right at the highest ones.

Let's put this into one sentence… If the scientific majority were wrong about macro-level unguided evolution, the error would likely not be factual blindness but framework blindness: an entrenched inability to see where valid observed science ends and protected philosophical extension begins.
