When “Skepticism” Becomes a Rival Faith

There is a kind of internet atheism that does not argue. He sneers. I had a run-in with Kaiser Basileus on Substack.

He began by calling religious people idiots. Then he pretended his insult was evidence. He called faith “woo,” but then made sweeping claims about the universe, eternity, consciousness, origins, and meaning without proving any of them.

That is not intellectual courage. That is selective skepticism.

His first failure is simple: insult is not logic.

Calling believers “intellectual children” does not disprove God. It only reveals his contempt. Mockery can win applause from people who already agree, but it cannot carry an argument.

Then comes the deeper problem.

He says, “No version of God has ever been demonstrated to be possible.”

That is not a neutral claim. It is a positive universal claim. To prove it, he would need to examine every serious argument for God across philosophy, history, theology, science, consciousness, morality, causation, contingency, and existence itself.

He has not done that.

The most he can honestly say is this: “I am not persuaded.”

That is a personal position. It is not proof.

Then he says, “There was never nothing. The universe was always more or less as it is now.”

Again, where is the proof?

Can he observe infinite past time? No.

Can he test an eternal universe? No.

Can he prove the universe has always existed? No.

He has simply replaced an eternal God with an eternal universe. That is not the removal of metaphysics. That is a rival metaphysical claim.

Then he says God is not “needed.”

But “not needed” is not the same as “not possible.” Preference is not proof. A person can prefer a universe without God. That does not prove that such a universe explains itself.

The same double standard appears in origins.

Can the anti-God skeptic prove abiogenesis? Not chemistry. Not amino acids. Not “life exists.” Can he prove a full natural pathway from non-life to coded, self-replicating, information-bearing life?

No.

Can he prove macroevolution in the full sense? Not a minor adaptation. Not a small variation. Can he prove that blind mutation and selection built new body plans, organs, consciousness, language, moral reasoning, and the human mind from bacteria-level beginnings?

No.

Can he prove the universe is eternal?

No.

So the issue is not “evidence versus faith.” The issue is one faith system mocking another while pretending that only religious people have assumptions.

The skeptic demands complete demonstration from the believer, then accepts speculation for his own worldview. That is not a reason. That is a stacked courtroom.

If God must be rejected because He has not been demonstrated to the skeptic’s satisfaction, then the skeptic must apply the same standard to abiogenesis, macroevolution, and eternal-universe claims.

No shortcuts.

No ridicule.

No special pleading.

No hiding behind phrases like “change qua change” or “the ineffable.”

The believer is not irrational for asking where existence came from. He is not stupid for asking why the universe is orderly. He is not childish for asking why life contains information, why moral law presses on the conscience, or why human beings hunger for meaning beyond matter.

Those are not childish questions.

They are the oldest and deepest questions human beings have ever asked.

The real intellectual failure is not belief in God. The failure is pretending that dismissing God removes mystery. It does not. It only moves the mystery somewhere else.

The atheist still has to explain existence.

He still has to explain life.

He still has to explain his mind.

He still has to explain morality.

He still has to explain why rational beings can study a rational universe.

Until he does, he has not defeated God.

He has only declared that he prefers a universe without Him.
