Comments - The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah
The Great Depression, the American Dust Bowl, farm failures, the rise of Communist influence in America, and the heroic struggle of a courageous woman and her two young children set the stage for Kristin Hannah's The Four Winds, first published by St. Martin’s Press in 2021. The book is available in hardcover, paperback, Kindle, and audiobook formats.
This story brings to life the realities of a challenging period in American history from 1921 through 1937. As a 25-year-old, Elsa Wolcott could not have imagined the twists and turns her life would take, including romantic entanglement, disownment by her parents, the surprises and challenges of motherhood, her husband's abandonment, the adversity of living on a dying farm, forced separation from loved ones, the uncertainty of beginning a new life at 38 without a husband and two young children, the anxiety of poverty and limited hope, and the downward spiral of her spirits and courage as an unending onslaught of challenges pummeled her.
Through her children's resilience and youthful spirit, Elsa discovered a deep love and an undying spark of hope that would not be driven from her life. Her 14-year-old daughter, Loreda, and her eight-year-old son, Anthony, fueled the fire of hope and purpose within her bedraggled soul. The children became Elsa’s only reason to hold on to her life. Ultimately, her daughter’s fire and courage proved to Elsa that meaning could be found even in the darkest, most threatening times for their family.
The story’s development is detailed, engaging, and believable. Hannah draws the reader into each character's emotional world and brings to life the struggles, heartaches, and frustrations the people of the Midwest plains must have experienced during that trying period. The fictional story becomes the actual historical reality. We are left with the feeling that, had we been born into similar circumstances in that period, we could have easily seen this story as ‘our’ story. It was that impactful.
Kristin Hannah writes with a focus on emotional, character-driven stories about women overcoming adversity; however, this particular story can be enjoyed by all (men and women alike) who appreciate a gripping story with believable characters in a realistic setting that resonates with any gender, as well as by those who are fascinated by superb writing skills.
