THE JUNIOR MARINES PROGRAM-Building Confidence and Resilience

THE JUNIOR MARINES PROGRAM; Building Confidence and Resilience
Growing up is hard. Especially those teenage years that are driven by physical, emotional and social changes. I believe this is the most challenging stage in life for all of us, but for the already at-risk teen, without guidance and the proper resources, this phase can be the start of a downward spiral. This is a time in life when we are extremely vulnerable to negative influences that can lead us to out of control and risky behaviors. For the young people considered to be at-risk, hanging around the wrong crowd, joining a gang, experimenting with drugs, alcohol and becoming promiscuous is more than a strong possibility.
That's why programs like The Junior Marines are essential to saving our youth. Programs that provide structure, mentorship, and positive reinforcement can transform and change the lives of these young individuals. According to the numbers of the national statistics at www.foratriskyouth/fact-sheet/. The amount of youth facing challenges such as poverty, homelessness, and lack of education are overwhelming. The for at youth fact sheet shows that every year:
1. 1,825 teens commit suicide
2. 66,065 teens are arrested for violent crimes
3. 139,795 teens are arrested for drug abuse
4. 420,846 babies are born to teen mothers
5. 880,143 babies are born into poverty
The Junior Marines is a wonderful program that offers discipline, education, and camaraderie to help at-risk teens develop confidence and resilience. It's an extension of the United States Marine Corps' values and training. It instills principles, honor, courage, and commitment. It's designed for teenagers and adolescence, especially those identified as at-risk due to different socio-economic or behavioral issues. The program provides a structured environment that promotes personal growth and leadership skills.
CORE TEACHINGS AND ACTIVITIES
Discipline and Structure: The Junior Marines program emphasizes how important discipline is, along with having a routine. While in the program teens take part in activities that require punctuality, respect for authority, and adherence to a strict code of conduct. This helps teens develop self-control and gives them a sense of responsibility. Being in a structured environment makes all the difference.
Physical Fitness: Physical training is a cornerstone of the Junior Marines program. Regular exercise, drills, and obstacle courses not only improve physical health but mental health as well. The program also teaches perseverance and the value of hard work. These activities help teens set goals, boosting their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment as they achieve these goals.
Leadership and Teamwork: This Junior Marines program knows how important it is for these young individuals to develop leadership skills. So they're given the opportunity to take on leadership roles within their units. By doing this they learn how to motivate and guide their peers. Teamwork exercises help them understand the importance of cooperation and mutual support, which are essential skills both within and outside the program.
Civic Responsibility and Community Service: The Junior Marines are encouraged to get involved in community service projects, taking on a sense of civic duty and empathy. These activities not only benefit the community but also provide the teens with a sense of purpose and belonging which is crucial at this age.
Mental Resilience: The program also includes activities designed around building mental strength and resilience. Through various challenges and scenarios, participants learn to cope with stress, handle adversity, and develop a positive mindset.

I'm convinced this program is something every parent needs that is struggling to keep their teen on the right path. But what does it cost and what is the schedule? The program cost can vary depending on the specific chapter and location. Generally, there are fees to cover uniforms, equipment, training material, and activities. The total cost can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars per year, depending on the intensity and what the program is offering.
However they do offer scholarships and Financial Aid. This is to make sure that families experiencing financial difficulties are able to offer their teen the same chance to benefit from the program as any other teen has. The scholarships are mostly funded by donations from community organizations, veterans' groups, and local businesses. You'll need to apply of course, by filling out an application and providing financial information to prove you qualify.
For extra convenience the program was built around school schedules as an after school program. Most of the Junior Marines programs operate after school, with participants meeting several times a week. There's also weekend training sessions and summer camps offered. Having weekend drills, community service projects and competitions offer more opportunity to grow.
The program typically excepts participants between the ages of 8-17 focusing on adolescence who can benefit most from the structured environment and mentorship provided. It operates in various locations across the United States, including major cities and suburban areas.
