How I Got Started : The Story of Passion For Things That Tell Stories.
Fun in Flipping
Hello all you folks reading this. It is really nice to meet you. My name is Dani and I am a 43 year old female from Kentucky and I have so many titles and jobs. I just do not really like to use labels that restrict me to one specialty.
Here in this great space I have founded in the writing and publishing world of the great World Wide Web, I have dedicated this space or stream they call it to nothing but flipping stuff. I flip everything I can from antiques, vintage and things from today. I flip Odd things, everyday things, hard to find things and much much more.
On this journey I have experienced so many things. I have also learned so many things. Sometimes, I have had to learn the hard way. Sometimes I have learned the easy way. Here is where I am going to share that with you. So, let me get you all caught up to where I am today and if you subscribe to my stream for just a little one dollar bill every month you will be able to continue to follow me on this great adventure.
I have always loved things that were old. I believe that antiques in particular have a story to tell. A story of when times were easier but people worked harder. When things were appreciated and neighbors were actually neighborly. When kindness was not foreign and marriages lasted a long long time. I feel like for every item I have came across there is someone out there who will love it as much I do.
About five years ago a friend of mine I had just recently met was selling a house for her uncle in Covington, Ky. The house had been condemned by the city. There were multitude of people who had moved into this house for whatever reason I am not sure. Most of them homeless and drug addicts who had promised to pay rent and of course hardly ever did and so they just started to pile in. Eventually, it got out of control and with no water or electricity the place started to fall apart and once it had the attention of the city it was pretty much just shut down. I learned at that time what a trap house was and how they came to be. This had definitely become a trap house. My friend had her work cut out for her.
She wanted to sell quick and so she made the quickest deal she could make with one of those people that put out the signs that say "We buy ugly houses," and so that is where I stepped in.
It started as her just needing a notary which is another one of my many adventures I have taken on and it quickly turned into a clean out job.
She had called me and asked me if there was anything in the house I would like that I could have whatever at no cost. She wanted it all gone and wanted it gone quick there was no check till the house was completely cleaned out and empty that was part of the deal she had made. When I decided to go ahead and stop in there to see if there was anything that I could use there I quickly saw some things that caught my eye that got me excited, very very excited. As I climbed the stairs I spit this door over in a corner and up against this door were desk and dressers and it was blocked off. I was curious and I had to know what was behind this door. I ask my friend about getting that door open and she said of course that was a room none of the tenants were allowed on so we barricaded it. I asked her why and she told me that it was Grandma and grandpas belongings and they were put there to be kept safe of the thieves and the drug addicts. So I quickly started to move the heavy furniture out of my way. Whxen I finally got to the door I opened it and what I saw inside was like finding that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I was literally staring at the most beautiful pieces of furniture I had ever saw on my life and there was no question I had to have everything in that room.
I ended up making a deal with my friend she could not refuse and I told her I would clean this entire house from top to bottom, rent a u haul at my cost not hers, and I would remove everything from this house in no time at all as long as she didn't let anyone else come there and pick through the house. She accepted the deal and I began to work.
To make a long story short I rented the U haul truck for a couple days ended up keeping it a week. I had taken on a huge two story house that was historic and also the three car garage that was with it. Every single space on that house was covered from floor to ceiling with anything and everything you could possibly imagine and that is when I decided to go ahead and get a storage unit because I thought to myself I can get rid of this stuff on the Internet and make my money back I am spending and it won't cost me anything at all if I do that. That was the very beginning of The Evolution of Things. I fell in love with finding all these treasures in this house and posting them for sale on just about every outlet that was available to sell on. My first sale ended up covering the u haul rental and at least three months of storage payments and the gas I had used it was an amazing feeling and the rush from making that much money on something I had gotten for almost nothing but my labor and and a couple hundred dollars. I was hooked.
Almost five years later I have now went from that very small storage locker to a huge unit that I keep full of items I have gathered from cleaning out more houses, consigning things to sell for others, dumpster diving and garbage picking, and flea market vendors who at the end of the day decide to give away what they have cause they don't want to pack it back home or to their storage units. I have went from listing one item at a time on every single outlet to knowing what items to list on what outlets and setting up flea markets and yard sales every single week during the spring and summer months and the most hardest lesson I have had to learn to date is when it's time to let things go that are just not selling no matter it's worth or how much I love it and think that someone special will come along and purchase this wonderful item any minutes. It is just taking up the space where I could be putting new items I pick up at that will sell quickly and bring in a profit.
I am still learning every day about this business and what it takes to be a part of this unique world of flippers, hustlers , store owners, antiquers, and people that are just addicted to the same thing I am and that is the joy of dogging through boxes of treasures to see what we have found and making money on them with little to no overhead. It's such a rush.
In the coming days, months and weeks and hopefully years I hope that you stay tuned in and enjoy reading my advice, tips, hacks and lessons learned so that I may help you in your journey of flipping, finding, collecting and selling.
Happy Hunting to each and every one of you. My hope is that you find the true joy and excitement in this ever growing business/hobby of letting your finds tell their stories of old to others......and of course to making money. Maybe even finding a pot of gold at the end of a 🌈.
