Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord;and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;his leaf also shall not wither;and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so:but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous:but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Psalm 1:1-6 KJV

Psalm 1 contrasts the blessed life of the “righteous” with the hopeless fate of the ungodly.

The “righteous” (vv. 1–3): Blessed is the person who avoids the influence of the “wicked”—refusing their counsel, lifestyle, and scornful attitude. Instead, they delight in and constantly meditate on God’s law (God’s Word and His way). Such a person is like a deeply rooted tree by streams of water: fruitful in season, ever-vibrant, and prospering in all they do. Nothing offends them or causes them to stumble (Ps 119:165)

The “ungodly” (vv. 4–5): In stark contrast, the wicked are like chaff—light, rootless, and blown away by the wind and unsteady ways of the “world”. They will not endure the tests of life nor, therefore, God’s judgment or stand among the “righteous”.

The Summation (v. 6): The LORD watches over and preserves the path of the upright, but the way of the wicked leads only to destruction.

What does this passage from God’s Word teach us about the character of God?

First, He is faithful to those that depend on Him. He is ever-present and available.

Second, He is good to those that practice His principles and way. These people experience prosperity in life. This can manifest in many ways that bless them and bring blessing to the whole beloved human race through them and their “fruitfulness”.

Finally, He is a God of justice (law) and order. He has established laws that bring consequences for blessing and suffering. All the universe operates in a state of “cause and effect”.

“Our LORD and Creator, we ask you to draw our attention to You and Your way. We pray for a desire to seek after You in whatever method of effective communication to each person individually. Whether it be through Your holy scriptures, a situation or testimony where someone else inspires or teaches us or the ‘still small voice’ of Your Holy Spirit.

May we always hunger and thirst for Your righteousness and grace in every situation or circumstance in our life. May we always be humble and teachable to Your instruction, however You communicate it to us.

In the Name of Jesus (Yeshua) we pray - Amen.
