Myth Deep Dive - The Corvus

The average common crow has a diamond shape tail, rather fitting for the indigenous story featuring the crow and the eagle fighting for the spearhead. Goes something like this: The eagle and crow both set out to perfect the spear-neither could have this spear. At night while the eagle was sleeping, the crow took a look at it figuring out how to make its own barbed spear. Sly and cunning, this crow did in fact make its own spear. Like humans, crows have large forebrains, which could explain why they are amazing intricate toolmakers and impressive nest builders. Let’s take a minute to shift into some eye-opening myths-
~ Starting with Greece~
The Raven God, Apollo, had a lover, ‘Coronis’, who was caught cheating. Coronis’s lover was stabbed in the chest, not killing him, but as punishment, Coronis then served under Apollo and banished from the white birds, “Ravens black as night yet bright as sun's rays.”
~ Norse~
Odin, God of war and death, lost his eye. Ravens sent in the night to collect and bring back secrets to him of everything happening. They could also report the future!
~ Indigenous Australia~
Two parts, crow and raven. The crow created humans, condemning them to death, while the raven gave humans everything they need for shape-shifting. Heavy theme of tricks, theft and seduction. Also, interesting to note in this myth, humans are made of leaves, they die and decompose like everything else.
~Dionysus~
Dionysus has a female follower, Coronis. *Trigger Warning* Butes rapes her, Dionysus makes him take his life, then turns her into a crow. Quite a theme of transformation if you ask me.
Thank you for joining me, I hope you learned something new about my favourite bird. Want to highlight the central themes of the crow that I carry with me, and maybe you will:
- Death and re-birth
- Adapt to any environment
- Creating/Creativity
- Patterns of Becoming
- Transformation/Passion
Tune in next week when I, Dr. Dreamscape, will share assorted stories and fun facts about ARCHETYPES (collective conscious, the Self, the shadow) and how they have been a light for me, and maybe you too!
