Why did Southern members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives vote against these bills? They did so overwhelmingly because each measure affected how they and their constituents lived and the spaces in which they lived. In addition, they were none too happy with the Brown decision as they saw it as unconscionable their children had to go to school with black children.
