The Joy of Being Sheep!

free note

I have often wondered why God refers to His people as sheep, anyone else? On one of my many journeys through God’s Word, it hit me! We need direction, instruction; we need to be led! Sheep are considered intelligent but must be led in order to go the right way and stay safe!

If we could realize that God’s Word is our instruction manual for life and how we can truly understand just how much our Creator loves us; we could stop fearing everything! If we understood His Promises and actually followed His instructions instead of simply hanging them throughout our homes and pretending, we do, we could find joy in being sheep! We could reflect on His Word and Promises instead of living by the Book of Us and wondering why everything goes wrong so often! God doesn’t refer to us as lacking smarts. He calls us SHEEP! Sheep are smart! So, why do we often roll our eyes at the thought of being led by God; like we are smarter than God and we know what’s best for us. How has that worked out so far?

One of my favorite books of the Bible is the Book of Psalms, mostly written by David. Yes, the courageous kid who brought three stones and a sling shot to a sword fight against a REALLY tall guy who though he was the best thing since Creation. David wrote, in my favorite Psalm, Psalm 23, what He realized God does for His people.

“The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He refreshes my soul. He guides me along right paths, for His Name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil; You are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely Your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” -NLT

In this song David has a light bulb moment and rejoices in being a sheep! Let’s break it down; reflect on each point as you enter your prayer time and find the joy in being a sheep!

1.       When I focus on God, He guides me, and I lack for nothing

2.       He allows me to rest and be renewed

3.       He helps me remain IN His will, FOR His will

4.       Rough days are certain, but as long as I remain focused on God, He’s got me

5.       The authority of God is comforting and powerful

6.       In Him I am restored, blessed and anointed

7.       I will never be alone as long as I remain focused on God
