Notd Notes

(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)

Notd is a new kind of public media network that does not rely on ads. Anyone can publish a stream for free, and readers create their own customized publication by subscribing to individual streams. Streams can be professionally reported news, opinions commentary, or personal information. There are community streams that let members post notes for each other, and no personal information is collected. Team streams allow groups of writers to create their own bundle (like a magazine). You can post hi resolution photos to share with your subscribers. Publishers can offer subscriptions to individual sections. Stream owners can charge for subscriptions, and keep 90% of the revenue (if they charge at least 10 cents per month). You can read more about Notd at https://notd.io/about, but the best way may be to just check out some of the popular streams here. Notd Notes is the only free stream on Notd, and you do not need an account to read it. Many streams are only one cent per month, and often have excerpts that are free to read. Since new users get $3 in free credit, you can check out most streams without even providing a credit card.

Why Settle for Just an Email Newsletter?
Many writers are trying out email newsletters to monetize their work. While this could work out well for some of them, relying on email as the only distribution channel limits their audience, and potentially, their revenue. Also, some newsletter services have minimum subscription rates so high that most writers will not attract many subscribers.

So you want free news?
Facebook is considering paying publishers for their content, so they can offer news on a separate, dedicated tab on Facebook. Given their history of exploiting news publishers' content at the expense of those publishers, there is good reason to be suspicious of this plan. However, before rejecting it out of hand, let's see what that might cost if Facebook actually wanted to do this without bankrupting publishers.

The Media Media must stop looking towards the usual suspects for change
Media that covers #Media #Publishing #Journalism #tech #SocialNetworks is often critical of traffic-driving algorithms, distribution of ad revenue, personal data collection/sale. Yet these writers have the ability to get users to force change.

One cool feature of Notd is annotations - you can explain or expand on notes without creating spaghetti prose. Instead of digressing from a point, you can add text that is only visible when you hover over the selected section of a note.

Twitter and Facebook give away their service for "free", but it's not free as in you don't give up anything for it. You give up privacy, and the right to choose what you see.

There is a debate on Galley (https://galley.cjr.org/public/conversations/-LXLajqoXhQjUHg5EbAe) about the pluses and minuses of twitter, and it expanded into a bigger conversation, so we'd like to make sure people know about Notd. Notd isn't a competitor to twitter, but it can perform some of the functions twitter is not good at but used for anyway.
