War for the Mother

The first Pandoran war ended against the Sky People 15 years ago. My mother Wäuven had just had me while my father Eyngfnai was assisting the Omaticaya clan with their resistance against the Sky People. I only know because my eldest brother Täumo told me stories about how a man from the stars, a Human man was chosen by Eywa to help us save our home but he is also the cause of the humans invading our planet and destroying it. Jake Sully is his name, he wasn't a very big man compared to me or other Na’vi he was nearly the height of a 4-year-old. I've heard my mother speak to the other fishers that he mated with the Olo’eyktan of the clan he was staying in. Three children I think they have now, the youngest just turned my age. From what I've been told from my father the Na’vi that fought in the First Pandoran War against the sky people were proud to do so and he was more proud that he assisted in sending many of the Humans back to where they came from. After that experience, he became stronger instead of fishing or weaving for the clan. He and other Tayrangi that fought in the war now go around the area of the clan territory to keep threats out to relive that glory he had fighting for his home, fighting for the people.

I wake in my Hammock with the light from the mother shining through the branches into my eyes. I sit up rubbing my still tired eyes to look to the left and right of me into my brothers' hammocks only to see that my brothers have woken up much earlier than me like they do every day. I look across from me into the nearby trees and my Mother and Father have gotten up as well, along with the rest of the clan. I jump out of my hammock onto the tree swinging down from branch to branch to get down. “You are a late riser young Zolikx, this is not a habit you should keep after your trials into adulthood.” The Tayrangi behind me says menacingly, jumping only slightly I turn around and look very high up so our eyes meet, now that I look at him he is one of the taller males in the clan at around 11’7 .“ Yes, Kune’ip I know I will do better and put in more work for the clan” I say to him standing as tall as I can to seem less intimidated. He pushes my chest in taking away my height to intimidate me like he normally does “I was going to look for my brothers, have you seen either Kune’ip?” asking as he circles me like an Ikran looking for its prey, whipping my legs with his tail as he does so. Kune’ip stops in front of me his Yellow eyes piercing through mine “Sweyn akum ‘evengan Kune’ip.” His mate, Litxvay passes by with a basket of fish to contribute to the clan basket. One of the elders I truly respect she's always kind and quiet, somehow she gets Kune’ip to listen to her when he normally rebels against everyone else

“You young one, go and find your brothers I’ll take care of this one for you'' she tells me putting the fish into another basket, giving Kune’ip a look so stern he avoids looking in her direction “Yes, thank you Lixvay!” I yell quickly running off before Kune’ip can stop me “Tell your mother I said hello!”Lixvay yells with a wave. I jump into the dense trees practically flying through them past the other Tayrangi that sit and play in them. Bumping into one or two even stepping on the ends of tails that hang on the branches, that is until I see the clan leader Ikeyani speaking with other Tayrangi of the clan in the center social area.

She was a major help in the first Pandoran war she was the best in aerial combat along with her mate Tsentey. Together they and the rest of the clan dominated the skies with their Ikran and took down many airships from what Father has told me. “ You seem infatuated Zolikx” Another Na’vi girl crawls down from a tree to poke fun at me. I quickly turn my braid whipping around my shoulder “ So shocked to see me sayrìp? Or shocked I caught you in a moment of awe” “Infatuated? Moment of awe?” I stood and questioned, shocked by the answers she was making me choose from “I would never! I was only recalling the stories my father has told me!” “calm now Zolikx this is no interrogation, I saw you running just curious as to where you are running off too” Ngayil says to me her green eyes soft and calm. “My brothers, have you seen Säayng or Täumo? I want them to finish a story they've been telling me over the days'' I ask as she moves closer to my chest to fix a bead coming loose on my songcord “Your brothers you say, I've seen them near the Eastern Clif adding more beads and charms to their songcords” her tail swings ruffling the branches of the bushes. “ Ngayil! Come we have important matters” Our heads turn to her above-average-height father he walked over standing at a large 11’4 “What is the meaning of this?” he asks, looking down at me, piercing through my soul where only Eywa should touch, again a feeling I've become too familiar with. His daughter's hands were still all over my chest. My heart sinks practically falling out of me “Fixing his songcord father, it is my duty to make sure the clan is in order right?” She quickly diverts his attention to her, he hums an unsure tune switching his focus between the two of us. “No matter, come with me I must teach you the sacred scrolls for you to become a proper Olo’eyktan” Tsentey begins to walk away with a deep sense of urgency Ngayil follows behind him giving me a quick smile goodbye. Now walking into lighter brush escaping the large oak trees and dense bushes of the village, coming upon a cold salty breeze that ruffles the free hair on the front and sides of my face. Feeling a deep sense of freedom I start to run up the Eastern Cliff, the long grass brushing my legs while doing so, once I reach the top I see both of my brothers sitting with their legs crossed on the very edge focusing on their songcords.

I slow my speed now walking to not break the focus they both have “Zolikx! You awoke late once again, didn't you promise Mother you would be better with that?” my oldest brother Täumo scolds me the second I get close “Täumo why not give him a break? He has been working harder than the other boy’s his age” the both stop working on their Songcords to argue about my lateness in getting up in the morning. “Brothers please, I'll just get up earlier than the rest that way there will be more time to work harder” I try and calm the situation my eldest brother stops his arguing to whip his tail around his waist and huffs. “Zolikx, sit” he orders and I follow. I cross my legs over one another with my hands on my knees waiting for another lecture while my older brother thumps his tail over and over on the grass going back to the additions of his songcord. “Zolikx, you are going to become a man, a man that Na’vi are going to count on. You can't just spend the early mornings sleeping like a baby in your hammock, you need to contribute to the clan more like fishing, weaving, even learning to be a hunter just like father was” “I know Täumo you say this to me nearly every day, won't you just trust that I'll get it soon I already know what I want to do” I say with a hiss of annoyance in my voice and the second that sentence ends a smack connects with the back of my head by my left ear. “ Maybe just show that you contribute more to the clan you always do things so secretive”

Säayng says standing up with his songcord ready to leave “Where are you going?” I ask him while rubbing the back of my head Täumo gives a nod also looking for an answer “I promised Mother that I would help with transporting the fish back and forth from the ocean and the clan basket” he gives a wave trotting down the cliff back towards the clan. Me And my brother sit in silence for a few moments before he says “I must go now, I'm going with Father to patrol the area around the clan” he stands and looks down at me “You must've come for a reason, did you have a question?” I look off into the bright horizon “A story, I wanted to ask if you could finish the one you've been telling me about the past few days” Brother stands staring at the swaying grass to recall. “You mean the one about the Sarentu clan” he turns his head back towards me his bad still facing down the cliff “I didn't think you liked that story so much that you'd come and ask me to finish it this early in the morning” “So would you tell it to me?” I look up at him our matching yellow eyes meeting each other “not now little brother, Before bed I will, this is the kind of story that one should fall asleep to and remember for the future” He tells me calmer than before and walking away down the hill to do his share of clan work with Father. I sigh and stand walking closer to the edge of the cliff, only to sit and feel a heavier breeze, watching the waves beneath me crash upon the rocks, fish jumping out every now and then. Looking back up towards the horizon where the sun meets the ocean for the first time of the day I take a deep breath, the first and final breath of the day where there is a sense of calmness and tranquility within my outer soul. Leaning backward onto the grass my arms spread apart from my body, the grass blades peaking through my fingers “What can I do to contribute” I sigh and close my eyes. Only the thoughts of the future worry me more than what my eldest Brother would do to me if I haven't found my calling, the only thing I was born to do and I haven't found it unlike everyone else my age. My eyes slowly open to stare at the baby blue sky, the sun not even reaching its prime yet as I stare, and Ikran zips across the sky, diving down and catching a simple bird out of the sky. Hunting is what the Ikran was born to do if flying was out of the equation, so are Viperwolves and the Thanator but Direhorse and Hexapede are to be hunted, why? I close my eyes once again after a deep thought for an undeserving nap.
