My fiction aims to create a sense of urgency and awareness -- a sense of responsibility to confront what is wrong and make it right. The imperfections in the world may be corrected through a serious effort to identify and reshape our assumptions about how society and our perceptions, and therefore our behavior, should be structured. We are entering a new stage in the evolution of human consciousness, bringing an awareness of the need for new goals and values. Together, we can contribute to that new way of thinking and behaving. I believe Kingsolver’s purpose in writing this story is to shed light on the problem of drugs in the lives of young people and to emphasize the role of poverty and limited opportunity in an environment that, by its nature, restricts one’s ability to share in the bounty found elsewhere, which seems out of reach.

Musings on the Afterlife

Reflecting on the afterlife is becoming a growing interest of mine for various reasons, not the least of which is that my life is succumbing to the inglorious process of the body losing energy and functionally degrading day by day. I have studied many religions and philosophies in search of answers to the question of why life is so frustratingly short and without apparent meaning.
