The more I think about it, the more I realize that power isn't something that's easily gained. Some people who work hard for power will do everything that they can to make others feel powerless. It took me a while to comprehend that my father is that kind of person.

A thriller from 1985 that demolishes genre expectations and blurs the lines between the supposedly upright and the morally and legally lax, To Live and Die in LA is a film focused on the hunt for counterfeiter Eric Masters waged by US Treasury Agent Richard Chance. Consumed with the need to extract revenge for Masters slaying of his partner, Chance will stop at nothing to catch Masters while his new by the book partner John Vukovich boils over in rage and frustration at Chance's methods. To Live and Die in LA has signature sequences- a foot chase in an airport, a car chase into oncoming traffic on the freeway- but is really focused on the tensions generated by the two very different protagonists in their pursuit of a criminal.

Slaughterhouse Five is a mix of a a time travel movie and war film where a former American POW in WW2 named Billy Pilgrim moves jaggedly and abruptly through time- past and future and back again and again. What director George Roy Hill and writer Stephen Geller have fashioned from author Kurt Vonnegut's novel is really an anti-war film disguised as slight sci-fi time travel picture and an at times, grim and powerful critique of World War Two and wars in general primarily through its Dresden sequences.

Day 1: The Beginning I started cautiously. Inhale. Exhale. Again. And again. At first, it felt unnatural. I realized how much I had taken breathing for granted. I wasn’t thinking about it before. I wasn’t intentional. That first day forced me to confront something uncomfortable: I had been breathing my entire life… but never with purpose. Within hours, something strange happened. My chest rose and fell more easily. My body didn’t fight it. It was like it wanted to continue. I almost quit right there. It felt too simple to be real. But I pushed through.

Year 2100 The Blood Scourge, a terrifying disease, it ravaged the world all over no cure was ever found. It attacked everyone without any discrimination. Very little survived if the disease was contracted. Symptoms included vomiting blood and headaches. It was an infection and it spread around the globe, people falling ill left and right. The disease causes many to vomit blood, their internal organs becoming a bloodied soup. When the infectious disease entered the body it took all but a month to finish its course. It would at first affect the mouth causing bloody sores to burst when something was eaten or drank. The sores would rupture making the blood travel down into the esophagus and stomach making the inner lining of each dissolving at a rapid rate. The dissolving tissue would then spread into the lungs and intestines. Then finally working a deadly path towards the heart and the brain. Some that survived it had mutations, an unworldly power. They were called Mutants.

In 1816, much of the Northern Hemisphere experienced unusual cold and crop failure during what became known as the Year Without a Summer. The cause was the massive 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia, which released ash and sulfur into the atmosphere, blocking sunlight and lowering global temperatures. Snow and frost struck parts of United States and Europe during summer months, leading to food shortages and economic hardship. The strange weather even influenced culture, as indoor confinement near Lake Geneva inspired Mary Shelley to begin writing Frankenstein. The event revealed how a single natural disaster could disrupt climate and society worldwide.

In 1932, Australia launched a military operation against thousands of emus that were damaging farmland in Western Australia. World War I veterans turned farmers had requested government assistance as migrating birds trampled crops and fencing. Soldiers armed with machine guns attempted to control the population in what became known as the Emu War. However, the emus proved surprisingly resilient, moving in small groups and outrunning gunfire. Despite firing thousands of rounds, the soldiers struggled to make a significant impact. The mission was eventually abandoned, and the event became a humorous but memorable chapter in Australian history.

In 1518, residents of Strasbourg experienced one of history’s strangest events: the Dancing Plague of 1518. It began when a woman started dancing in the street without music or explanation. Within days, others joined her. Soon, dozens — possibly hundreds — were dancing uncontrollably for weeks. Some reportedly collapsed from exhaustion, and a few may have died. City officials, believing the cure was to let it continue, even hired musicians. Historians still debate the cause, with theories ranging from mass hysteria brought on by stress and famine to environmental factors. The true explanation remains uncertain, making it one of history’s most puzzling mysteries.

In 1325, the rival Italian city-states of Bologna and Modena went to war in a conflict later nicknamed the War of the Bucket. While political tensions between factions had been building for years, legend says the final spark came when Modenese soldiers stole a wooden bucket from a well in Bologna. Bologna demanded its return; Modena refused. The dispute escalated into a real battle at Zappolino, where Bologna, despite larger numbers, was defeated. The bucket became a lasting symbol of the rivalry. Whether it truly caused the war or simply represented deeper conflict, the story remains one of history’s strangest triggers.
