I thought I was taking the bus to the mall to see a weird animated science-fiction movie. I had no idea Heavy Metal was about to introduce me to artists who would follow me for decades, open another door into rock ’n’ roll, and become one of those seemingly ordinary moments that looks completely different when you revisit it years later. Turns out, Mom’s twenty bucks may have financed more than a movie ticket.

Before I knew Blue Öyster Cult was a band, I was pretty sure they were an actual cult. 😂 Then came “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” late-night radio, Heavy Metal, Godzilla, psychic wars, worn-out 45s and decades of insisting I wasn’t really a BÖC fan. It took a front-row seat at one of their shows for me to finally discover the truth: apparently, I had been a Blue Öyster Cult girl all along. 🤘❤️

Journey was more than a hometown band. Their music found me when I needed somewhere safe to land. From lying in the dark listening to Escape, to discovering the magic of “Lights,” understanding “Faithfully” only after living the road myself, and watching “Don’t Stop Believin’” become an anthem for generations, Journey has followed me through a lifetime. Queen made being weird okay. Journey made me feel whole. This is the story of a band, a sound, and a lifeline.

Before Coachella, Outside Lands and today's massive festival culture, Bay Area rock fans had Day on the Green. For one young woman still finding her place in Rockerland, a birthday and graduation present became much more than an all-day concert. Before I knew AC/DC, they were already everywhere. My brother woke the house with “Highway to Hell,” the rockers wore the shirts, and one boy kept trying to tell me what all the fuss was about. Then he played “For Those About to Rock” and I heard it: Wait... is that a cannon? From Bon Scott and Brian Johnson to Angus Young, the concert I wish I’d seen, and a band still rocking decades later, this is one Gen X reflex that never went away. Guitar. Anticipation. Cannons. Reflex intact. 🤘⚡

Some songs take a few notes to recognize. Others hit something deeper. For me, the opening of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” is one of those sounds. I first heard it as a brainy kid trying to figure out what a rock song had to do with Mark Twain. Then I heard the drums. Decades later, after finally seeing Rush live and watching the band face unimaginable loss and a new chapter, that sound still does exactly what it did back then. Head up. Back straight. Reflex intact. 🎸🥁

Before I knew who I was, I knew I was different. I was the weird kid who loved science fiction, fantasy, stars, stories and music that didn’t always fit the world around me. Then my brother handed me a Queen album. Somewhere between Freddie Mercury, fantastical songs, liner notes and late nights with my cassette player, I began to wonder if being different wasn’t something I needed to fix after all. Maybe I just needed permission to be me.

Before streaming put almost every song a tap away, finding new music could be an adventure. We saved our money, gathered our friends, headed to places like Tower Records, and hunted through the racks for treasure. Sometimes we found exactly what we came for. Sometimes we discovered something we never knew existed. Welcome to The Way We Listened, where the journey to the music was often half the fun. 🎸🎲

Before Queen was legendary to another generation, they were the band that helped a lonely, nerdy kid find joy, confidence, and somewhere to belong. Then one night, armed with a concert ticket and an astonishing amount of trust from my mother, I boarded BART alone to see Freddie Mercury and Queen. Decades later, I understand just how extraordinary that night was. Some memories don't fade. They become more valuable with time.
