A thriller from 1985 that demolishes genre expectations and blurs the lines between the supposedly upright and the morally and legally lax, To Live and Die in LA is a film focused on the hunt for counterfeiter Eric Masters waged by US Treasury Agent Richard Chance. Consumed with the need to extract revenge for Masters slaying of his partner, Chance will stop at nothing to catch Masters while his new by the book partner John Vukovich boils over in rage and frustration at Chance's methods. To Live and Die in LA has signature sequences- a foot chase in an airport, a car chase into oncoming traffic on the freeway- but is really focused on the tensions generated by the two very different protagonists in their pursuit of a criminal.

Slaughterhouse Five is a mix of a a time travel movie and war film where a former American POW in WW2 named Billy Pilgrim moves jaggedly and abruptly through time- past and future and back again and again. What director George Roy Hill and writer Stephen Geller have fashioned from author Kurt Vonnegut's novel is really an anti-war film disguised as slight sci-fi time travel picture and an at times, grim and powerful critique of World War Two and wars in general primarily through its Dresden sequences.

When it was revealed Mike Tyson and Jake Paul staged their fight, no one could've or even would've though that it would happen again. But, man, were we proven wrong!

A fashion forward though employer backward comedy about an assistant to a fashion magazine editor and her efforts to placate and please her, The Devil Wears Prada is an effectively made comedy. Thanks to great work from leads Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway and great supporting work by Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci and a skillful job by director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh Mckenna, Lauren Weisberger's novel is adapted into a sharp but not scalding workplace comedy.

A surprisingly enjoyable and effective sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors is largely set in a psychiatric hospital but uses this as a take off point for the Dream spaces of its patients who much like Nancy Thompson from the original film are threatened by the ultimate nightmare maker and slayer Freddy Krueger. Well directed by Chuck Russell with nice performances by Heather Lagenkamp as Nancy and Patricia Arquette and Jennifer Ruben as patients Kristen and Taryn respectively Dream Warriors remains one of strongest and the best of the sequels to A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Reservoir Dogs subverts some of the conventions of crime films by having a heist film that doesnt contain any scenes of a heist but merely discusses it, characters identified only by colors, an opening scene which has nothing to do with plot but wisely gives the audience an introduction to the personalities in the movie. Quentin Tarantino in his first feature creates a film that denies the audience the certainties provided in most genre crime and only provides enough for them to follow the narrative which is deliberately fractured through flashback anyway An intriguing and riveting debut film.

The most intriguing and thought provoking of the original Star Trek movies, Star Trek-The Motion Picture has been written off unfairly by both fans and disinterested parties alike. Star Trek is actually the engine that help drive the eventual success of the sequels and I would dare say Star Trek The Next Generation. Star Trek-The Motion Picture is space drama not space opera, an intelligent film that deals with an alien force not by mere threats but seeking understanding and communication.

A conspiracy thriller combined with post modern noir and wrapped in codes, symbols and subtext, Under The Silver Lake is a feature that requires attention and focus from the filmgoer. A filmic scavenger hunt that subverts expectations and conventions.
